This in the SMH today seems to confirm his treatment camp was a turning point for Triantis.

“Triantis, 22, was called up by the Socceroos in March but was not used, and his negative experience in camp contributed to his decision, according to sources close to him.“

The one positive from this is that it’s clear Segecic’s preference is for Oz.

Was just about to post the same article. Honestly I don't know how any could still be defending Popovic after reading that. Why the fuck would he have at the very least not reached out to say, you're doing great, we're watching you, keeping doing what you're doing and your time will come before long to join the group. Shows absolutely abysmal man management that this isn't happening. Regardless of WC qualification, if we lose Segecic following on from Triantis, he should be sacked. Segecic's form last season demanded selection, but as always Popovic moves slower than an iceberg until others start to take notice and he questions his allegiance.

And people have the nerves to call out Triantis when clearly the problem is larger.

I hope this doesn’t come back to bite us for other prospects who they should be bringing in.

If not playing in the March window is really what drove him away then we are well rid of him. We are better off without someone who doesn't really want to be a part of a team, and he will be happier elsewhere. A win win situation.

Like in any work employment if you don’t like your boss then it can force hand to leave looking for a another job and environment.

If the environment wasn’t great for him then it poses questions whether it’s good for the players.

Yep - lets call up Kofi Danning. He's the right age. Either that or another son of an assistant coach

You really wonder what's happened there. We must not forget Triantis had played for the U20 at a tournament and has had around 6 different managers in his career already. Talk about misalignment.

Like Arnold too he had his environment and very in form players like Dougall and Elder went to a camp and fit the mould.

Has Triantis definitely signed the paperwork?

It should be more inclusive than at club level put it this way.

There should have been. They'd already excelled for the U20 and both were available. Triantis wasn't very involved at club level so there wouldn't have been a disruption. Segecic was in and out in The Netherlands and a squad inclusion would've put this matter to rest. I don't expect the FA or our coaches to have such foresight however.

These two aren't random young players. They were the best at the U20 Asian Cup and needed Socceroo tying up accordingly.
At the U23 Asian WC Qualifier Tournament, when Aus couldn’t hit the side of a barn, Segecic played, but IMO wasn’t one of the best players.

Triantis wasn’t there.

Better players were Courtney- P at Left CB, the keeper (Beach?), Jake Hollman, Lachlan Brook, Valadon and Milanovic.

Teague and Nishan V were just a bit behind - both now Socceroos.

The Olympic qualifying tournament? What a horrible one that was. I vaguely remember Segecic being thrown on to salvage something and maybe he whipped one shot. Can thank Vidmar for the shambles.

When was the last time we had an Aussie genuinely up there in player of the season discussions in ANY league on the continent...maybe even outside of Australia?? You'd be hard pressed to find any others.

That player was Triantis.

If that's it for the Socceroos career that almost was....this is a huge failure by Popovic's tenure and if he doesn't even get pressed on it in this upcoming window then the media aren't doing their job.

I can't read the article but if Rugari is quoting bad environment experiences in his article then I actually expect Rugari and Popovic to gloss over that the next time. That's Triantis's own perception at least.

You'd love to get some first hand accounts. Who knows what's gone on there? Pure speculation but maybe Irvine as captain felt he wasn't gelling. He got so much media time. Incredibly frustrating.

I'm genuinely curious about the timing of Triantis and Pavlešić's decisions. Neither is a guaranteed starter for Greece or Croatia at this stage, and it might have been wiser to wait and see how their careers develop before making a switch. As far as I understand, these changes are permanent — so even if they're uncapped over the next five years, there’s no going back. It’ll be interesting to track their progress, but like many others, I’m concerned this won’t be the last case. We could eventually see a strong Australian XI made up of players representing other nations.

Was Velupillay called up as to ward off Sri Lanka? :D

Pavlesic just signed in the 2nd Croatian tier I think. Good luck to him. The family influence certainly needs to be considered and respected here. These players have their own ideas and then a few get into their ear and it can all come to a head.

Triantis's situation is pretty simple. Very strong Greek influence (a good thing), succeeding in Europe, a Greek flag makes his value with UEFA clubs even higher and he can forgo long travel and have an international career amongst something he's familiar with.
