Sounds like 20/20 hindsight to me.There should have been. They'd already excelled for the U20 and both were available. Triantis wasn't very involved at club level so there wouldn't have been a disruption. Segecic was in and out in The Netherlands and a squad inclusion would've put this matter to rest. I don't expect the FA or our coaches to have such foresight however.
These two aren't random young players. They were the best at the U20 Asian Cup and needed Socceroo tying up accordingly.
Most people here had a collective meltdown when Okon was selected over Ballard. The idea it would be accepted to do this for multiple players every competitive window seems unlikely.Sounds like 20/20 hindsight to me.
The players in question are ones who have a strong chance at coming good. Meanwhile we've been busy playing Brattan, Caceres, Jones, Borrello and giving Okon a ridiculous invitation. Not to mention the overplaying of Irvine, Behich, Duke and Leckie which has only hindered rejuvenation. Irvine only redeemed himself in the March window. He'd been horrid for a good 12 months prior. There wasn't.
All this talk of locking players in is a waste of space. You can't just do one cap any more. Probably to prevent exactly this thing and restricting players representing smaller nations.
Let's say we have 10 guys we're worried about, it's going to take multiple windows to make this happen. The absurdity of every window knowing there will be 2 or 3 late subs getting peoples caps up. Not to mention if we are losing and actually need to make a real substitution. Far better to make national selection to be something players strive for.
The signs were there in March 2023 at the U20 Asian Cup. Arnold invited some young players to his very first camp. Stupidly we took 3 right backs to the Asian Cup. We're not talking about someone as bad as Marc Warren here.Sounds like 20/20 hindsight to me.
Okon is the exact type of selection Segacic and Triantis would have been atthat time. Not playing, did well for us at youth level. The players in question are ones who have a strong chance at coming good. That's true yet we're discussing the bigger issue of other countries being able to get them. The other matter is the preliminary qualifiers can allow for these cases to be sorted. Once it was clear we were going to advance, we needn't have played every single regular all the time.Okon is the exact type of selection Segacic and Triantis would have been atthat time. You cant compare Okon's last 12 months at club level to Triantis last 12 months. Triantis arguably top 3 player in SPL last season outside of the big two teams. That alone should have been more than enough justification to be winning caps. I'd say he was probably also in top 5 of all Aussies at club level last season. Okon has zero runs on the board at club level.Okon is the exact type of selection Segacic and Triantis would have been atthat time. Not playing, did well for us at youth level.

All of these selections are fine. If the manager thinks it is in the best interests of winning and good squad development. Not for the sake of locking someone down basedon what they might become. Especially not when you have to find them 3 competitive caps to do it.That's true yet we're discussing the bigger issue of other countries being able to get them. Triantis had already reached great heights in the A League. Matthews had achieved less and was rewarded with a call up. He's also a good player of course but we didn't need to worry about Matthews playing for another country.
I think an initial cap in the preliminary round can at least help get the wheels in motion. I think it's foolish to be so risky with what is evident as very good talent. We've had plenty of flops before but these guys seem different. Toure still isn't locked in.All of these selections are fine. The last two WCQ squads there were posters asking for Segecic in the squad on his AL form. It's still difficult to tie him because it needs to be 3 caps for those 4 games.I don’t remember anyone pushing for Segacic to be capped in March 2024. Happy to be proven wrong though. Not sure there was that much of a push for Triantis back then either.
That's right, it's not possible unless you're very targetted. You can't do it with everyone. But its easy to Greece or Croatia to get our guys to sign a form and bam they're gone. No caps needed. It isn't an even playing field. There wasn't.

If Segecic has played for Croatia can we get him to sign that paperwork?Segecic previously told ESPN: “I played for the [Croatian] U17s; it could be a possibility. It's just whatever opportunity arises. If the Aussies aren't going to give me the chance, and I have an opportunity to play first-team international football, no kid can say no to that”
We've lost him I reckon. He'll keep hitting the straps and Croatia will call him up. The way he refers to ' the Aussies' tells me he looks towards The FA as 'them'.
The one time Okon was called up to a training camp and then subsequent squad was the time Triantis refused to come. Triantis was called up in March and Okon wasn't. That tells me Triantis was higher up on Povovic's list of potential Socceroos than Okon, with the difference being one ditched us and the other hasn't at this stage. You cant compare Okon's last 12 months at club level to Triantis last 12 months. I'm not sure on the exact details of the paperwork route, but this would suggest neither nation can do it as he played for both underage. But there are still people who can play under age for two nations. It seems to be cases such as Pavlesic, maybe because it was just a grandparent connection? It does seem to be a gap that is being exploited in certain cases. If Segecic has played for Croatia can we get him to sign that paperwork?
My guess is one of Okon, Esposito or Bonetig was earmarked for a squad place if they impressed. A developmental spot. We can like or dislike this approach, but Okon wasn't competing against Triantis for a squad place. The one time Okon was called up to a training camp and then subsequent squad was the time Triantis refused to come. I didn't say he was. I think Triantis was on line for an actual spot rather than a development add on but knocked us back. My point was Triantis was already ahead of Okon. I'm in favour of having up to a couple of spots for development when we pick 26 players for a 2 match window. My guess is one of Okon, Esposito or Bonetig was earmarked for a squad place if they impressed.
