Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Reviewing the season we finish 4th with a 13 win, 11 losses and 2 draws season. Obviously Prestons points deductions give us a home final.

Overall this wasnt an enjoyable npl campaign to follow for various reasons. Our inability to field strong teams week in week out made it difficult to follow, and Lakeside which should have been our fortress we saw poor South teams take the field too often.

If we are to compete on all fronts we need to boost our current 13 top quality players to at least 18, so when we make the changes like we did today our quality doesnt fall off a cliff.

Not sure we can go all the way here but if we dont beat Heidelberg i would consider the domestic campaign to be a failure. No excuses next weekend.

Definitely teething issues being first season doing ofc. Club needs to look into how they can better create a squad to compete when players are away for ofc. The ressies up to u23. I understand the club trying to promote youth development but at the same time we need to have the best u23 talent in the league. Our u23 squad had van riet osullivan, skapoulas, dovison and papadimitriou who have shown enough in senior appearances yet unfortunately3 of them are gone. At the same time if our senior squad needs to have a certain ammount of u23 then we also need better. The senior 23 to start the year had coveny, lackay, meneleu pope, cocks Singh all under 23. Players like coveny and Lackay should have been on the u23 roster still not the senior roster. Less said the better about Singh lol.

Lampard coming along better than Mikkola atm. I dont think either of them start next week. Sinisa will almost certainly go with the Adelaide/Preston lineup.

Mikkola, Lampard, Eliopoulos and Swibel is a decent enough bench if we are forced into a change.

Im expecting Sinisa to go into CT mode and push next weeks team to play close 90 mins like he did midweek.

Preston have done a hell of a lot of good work the past 6-7 years to get to the position they're in. Well done for this and for raising the bar and bringing the local game to life. Never thought I'd see us and you guys play these incredible derbies again. They've been such tense and passionate football spectacles. All 4 times I've been to BT Connor reserve the past few years I've been impressed with the organisation and security arrangements. I'm glad Wednesday night went incident free. My daughter went to the game with her Maco friend from work and stood amongst the Preston fans. Was her first ever local game and she really enjoyed it. Told her we might be playing Preston in the finals at Lakeside next week and said she'll invite her friend to sit with the Greeks as payback lol.
She'll have to wait till the Grand final now :P

Thanks to a late equaliser from Altona we host Heidelberg next week.

My thoughts on the performance? Average, and like i said yesterday our depth is not the best. We could have played for hours and not scored.

Same lineup as Wednesday night for the derby next week i think.
Eh, a bit of "jetlag" from mid week is to be expected and the "new" players still haven't got many miles in to their legs... We DID hit the crossbar 17 times or something ridiculous.

I honestly thought it was the snake charmer from OV that had come back to haunt Preston.. Their village nightclub music sounds exactly the same.
Well maybe we can borrow it for this weekend and the Bergers will feel right at home. Oh no my bad they don't like lakesdie because we have a track around it. How they must have forgotten OV used to be the same

Their ground reminds me of the saying 'Putring lipstick on a pig'.... they threw some dirt over it and a coat of cheap paint and suddenly its Wembley and they are spoilt with seats being so close to the action ...

We have lost twice to Heidelberg this year given we have largely fielded a U20/23 team. Time to actually play our full strength side against them and progress to the Semi Final against either Hume City or Oakleigh.
If Sinisa is going to Avondale and JA is coming to South we may very well see both sides field the U15s in an effort to lose. hahahahha

Agree - the starting XI against Preston was probably our strongest line up.

Lopez
Painter-Andrews
Jankovic
Ramazani
Giannakopoulos
Pasquali
Retre
Yoo
Uchida
Cocks
Juach

Bench - Charlston, Swibel, Lampard, Mikkola, Menelaou, Nkwomo

Just hoping for a decent cross or a decent corner kick.
