I don’t think Ethnic clubs should join the current A-League for that reason. Joining the A-League, whether rightfully or not, would require the adoption of a secular and universal identity which I don’t think would be good for clubs like Hellas as they would lose a key part of their identity. What makes South Melbourne “Hellas” is its Greek identity.
However, when pro/rel comes of course I would like to see Ethnic clubs be able to get promoted and relegated, whilst still keeping their proud identity. Ethnic clubs wouldn’t be the same without their identity, culture, food, language, etc. This doesn’t make racial abuse okay, but they shouldn’t have to give up their identity to join the A-League.
In fact, I think if South Melbourne did join the A-League, most of the old fans would boycott the club to the point where they go broke (the fans would probably form a phoenix club though which would survive, similar to how AFC Wimbledon was formed by Wimbledon fans angry about the club relocating to Milton Keynes to become MK Dons, or how Man United fans founded United of Manchester).
