Women's Asian Cup match discussion thread

Yes, they don't count for locking in, but it does count for setting your initial 'nation'. This can only be changed by a player once.

I've bolded/underlined the bits that are relevant from that.

I think we can all agree that players can change as underage matches don't count to fully locking a player in (art 9 par 2), so I'm not going to go much in depth on that other than the main principle of Article 9:

Now in terms of changing back, Art 9 Par 6 is described by FIFA only as:

Article 9 Par 5 that it refers to:

The kicker there is, that it doesn't say anything about "A" internationals (which is overage international matches, so Socceroos and Matildas), so it includes ANY LEVEL in ANY KIND of football.

Thus, in the instance of Volpato - should he choose to change from Italy to Australia, yes he will be cap-tied after playing a friendly.
Beard was able to change as she had only played for Australia and met the criteria to change under Article 9 Par 2.
I'm only focusing on Volpato/Beard case. If he played a friendly for Italy, he would not be tied, same for if he played a friendly for Aus. FIFA states it has to be 3 competitive games.

Beard did not play competitive games, hence she could change.

When Angie Beard jumped ship from the Matildas to the Philippines the rules then stated that players could play in no more than three A internationals, either competitive or friendlies, and she only just met the threshold having gotten three caps for the Tillies.

Yes, but you're missing the key point of Volpato has to change his association to play for Australia, which he can only do once. So if he decides to switch to Australia, any game thereafter will tie him.

The 3 games requirement that we are all referring to only applies to those who haven't changed their association yet.

What do you mean by 'association'?

The football association which a player is representing, so in the case of Volpato it would be the Italian football federation and he wants to consider jumping ship to Football Australia.
Yep - this.

So essentially, anyone that's played youth for another country, then came to play for Australia, even if they haven't met the 3 competitive matches requirement, are tied to Australia now - I think with the exception of those who made the change before a certain date (2020 or something like that), as they are essentially in a grace period since the rules about changing back weren't in effect then, and FIFA argues 'they may not have known the rules would change' or something like that. But they still have to be under that 3 competitive overage matches requirement in that case.

was only a touch off as well, so it was good space made by her too
And the delivery first of - perfect ball.
The rest as tsf it was meh expected least 4 goal rout.
Is Phil ranked in the 40’s.

Look forward they step up against stronger opponents.

As of 11 December 2025, the Philippines are 41st, whereas we are 15th.

As usual from her! I’m sure she’ll score a couple more this tournament.
I think Hayley Raso will be on the scoresheet at least once come Thursday when we play against Iran, and possibly also against South Korea, but it would be very much a shame if she failed to find the back of the net throughout the entirety of the Matildas' campaign.

South Korea are about to beat Iran 3–0. Either we should be scared of/play defensive against South Korea (who we beat twice in friendlies last year) or Iran will be super easy.

Personally I’m mixed. I know we’ll beat Iran but I’m now quite nervous for the Korea game knowing how bad we were at finishing against the Philippines (despite our defensively solid performance). Japan I’ve always been worried about but now they seem scarier.

I'm a bit disappointed with the two games. I wanted Iran and Philippines to be more competitive. I thought both team defended well but never looked close to scoring

We shouldn't be that scared of South Korea given our favourable record against them, albeit in friendlies, as well as the fact that the Matildas will be fielding essentially a full-strength starting XI but to be fair they only won four games last year and have shown they can get the job done previously, eliminating the Tillies in the quarterfinals last cycle.

Depends what our aim is. I know it's obviously to win the tournament (because everything comes with it), but that's kind of what happens when these tournaments double as qualifiers - you'll find countries like Philippines playing the way they did because progressing to the Quarters means next stage of Olympic Qualifiers, and a good chance of World Cup Qualification.
