The EFL Thread

The rate at which they've been able to get quality players in is faster than any other club in the EFL.

Their recruiting from the 5th to 3rd division was always of that higher than the grade which allowed them to easily go up.
Of course, they now have rich owners and good luck to them. I would suggest that you research the history of North Wales and Wrexham in particular. They are truly blessed to have these two guys put their money in, a real rags to riches story and it isn’t over yet.

I can see both sides of the coin here. Understandably people think it’s become too corporate but on the other hand Wrexham are more successful and well-known than ever before.

Rags to riches is earned, not by lotto wins. I get the club was nearly bankrupt but their beginnings were much more humble than the bling that has come to them. Ridiculous tours to Australia are an example of how far financially they're supported compared to Leyton Orient, Gillingham or Plymouth.

Money and support is good but the growth should come organically rather than having so much leverage to recruit with ease. It's become a cheat code.

What you end up getting is clubs like Malaga, Anzhi or PSG that are so plastic and commercialised that the apparel becomes a fashion statement more than a football club.

Yes, the business side is then successful but I don't think working class clubs want or need that.

If a team is bad then the suits run away. The moment they improve they come leeching for their cut.

I was born a few miles from Wrexham and would love to have a benefactor for my local team now languishing in division two. It would mean the world to the people who turn up week in week out to watch their team. Football is very tribal particularly in the lower echelons .

But isn't that every club in the champions league? I don't like Wrexham either more because people start liking them because of reynolds

As I said before ‘tall poppy syndrome’.
It's not tall poppy syndrome when it's gifted to you. Wrexham have bought their way to the top and turned it into a media circus. The club isn't anywhere near what they were before the money.

What happens when it stales and the owners pull out? They end up back where they were unless they implement some sustainable financial management.

Essential yes but that's what has diluted the UCL if it wasn't already.

You get the odd fairytale like Bodo but otherwise it's boring and repetitive and that's even with the reformed league system.

I don't know what it was but in 2017 or around there the knockout stage was big. I spreading the matchdays also closed the spectacle of following multiple ties on a night.

JS96 though got to say you can’t pick your ogarlords.
They pick you.
Look I’m no fan of the owners other commercial business but in ways I’m happy for a struggling club for yonks climb the ladder.
Today it will always be due to the money full stop.
Hopefully the club keeps its identity importantly and yes success brings increased costs that in time will hurt some long time locals no diff to what’s happened to the many who were long time epl club members now getting tapped out for more corporates.
I agree that stinks but this is way pro sport has gone line most things and gonna get worse.

All true but that's why people are reverting to non league or the EFL. Thankfully there are plenty of EFL clubs that aren't polished up and while the goal is to eventually go up, it's much more about self sustainability and community.

Yep and that’s the crux in the end for many - draw the line in the sand.
You stay or you opt out that once upon a time unheard of.
