The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

Not, by any means, disparaging economists, but if Janakan had made up some name and pretended to "interview" an economist about how or why a NST would be unsustainable most would have attacked the premise of the article, not the credibility of the economist.. Truly one of those bizarre Australian Soccer moments...
funny enough, I've interviewed 2 of them and read the economics literature, the consensus seems to be the other way around

in particular no regulations that "it must have this minimum criteria" will over the long run do better than no criteria and letting competition raise the standard over time

when I look at the coming fixtures, I really can't pick a MOTR - every game has that certain "must" for X club.
Its pretty damn good.
That canberra croatia striker has caught my eye and I'll make a point of watching them this weekend

Our regular reminder that Yoogali SC - a club that Capital Football has kicked out of their NPL for being 'too far to travel to' (despite not finishing last in the league - the usual relegation slot) beat Canberra Croatia (in Canberra!) late in the season, while using 12 of their matchday 18 from their victory over Preston.

5 of the other 6 are post-season signings from across the Capital Football NPL.

Nothing against Canberra Croatia - great club (one of the three in Canberra that have made me feel most welcome over my 15 years here) - but an indictment on Capital Football.

Hey mate, what do you hear about regarding the perception of Avondale amongst the Italian community? What do APIA and Marconi for example think of them?
I honestly think most people in the Italian community don’t really think about them, and that’s part of the problem for them. Atleast they don’t think of them as anything more than a suburban club..ie. not the same thing as Marconi or Adelaide city or APIA. Money (particularly when it’s coming from a backer rather than the club itself) or short term success can’t buy history, and let’s be honest that’s what most of the traditional clubs have been running on in the post nsl era, and what attracts people to them, tradition, history and historical context. You cant buy it, you can’t manufacture it. You can’t make a new historic club, it doesn’t work that way

There was a long period of time when clubs like Marconi or Adelaide city were the pinnacle of Australian club soccer, they were as good as it got, so they’re not just normal suburban clubs, and the historic reasons they became clubs that they did also don’t apply to Avondale, they were never the community hub for outcast migrants etc it’s all about context. I think most people just see Avondale as a suburban club who happen to be good at the moment. Just because they’re strong on the field right now doesn’t make them a big club. They’ve got a lot of catching up to do to make up for all those decades of history when they were just a park team

Probably most people at Marconi or APIA think of Avondale the way they would about Bayswater or something in WA. They think it’s a team that happens to be up the top of their state league right now with an Italian connection and that’s it.

Imo and I think most would agree that the big Italian clubs in Australia are Marconi, Adelaide city, APIA, then maybe historically Brunswick juventus, but nowadays it’s probably daylight after those 3 (refer to my comment the other day re many people not considering the current Brunswick juventus to be the actual Brunswick juventus/the merger de merger situation). Not Avondale

And for Melb Italian clubs it was probably originally Brunswick juventus, then Fawkner, then maybe bulleen or Essendon royals. Not Avondale.

Like if Clifton hill got a rich backer and won promotion multiple times and won the npl..that would be good for them, but it doesn’t mean they compare to/are the same thing as a club like South Melbourne or Sydney Olympic or Heidelberg and West Adelaide

Also i think they announced the crowd at around 5,300. Just goes to show that we havent really scratched the surface when it comes to how big this championship can be when we got 1pm and 3pm games. The 3 Friday night games have drawn almost 17,000 combined.
Those midday kick offs just aren’t conducive to big crowds. They’re either done with tv in mind, or to avoid competition with the a league, but certainly not to get the best crowds possible. Either that or they’re incompetent

Sorry, whilst it looked a healthy attendance, it was not near 5300 people. Yes , I did watch the game. I have been attending games for 55 years and that was not what they announced.

You gotta give it up at some stage... bc if you cant see 5k there but could see 11k at victory and 8 at central coast opening rounds then i suggest an eye check is in order..

Maybe remove your rose tinted specs as well.

Look the more that attend football in this country, the better. But on both sides telling fibs, does the sport no good at all.

That ground has only 800 seats all facing the camera and looked fullish. But where was the 4,500 on the other three sides of the ground.

I think another issue is they share a ground with 2 other teams. Its also often used as a place to hold makeshift fixtures when teams can't play at their ground.

Also the backlash they received taking brunswick zebras to court etc

Don't even get anyone started on all the Italian club mergers that have happened. Doesn't surprise me alot don't like each other
Plus as far as appealing to younger fans goes, they(both BJuve and the BZebras 'usurpers') certainly can’t count on support from those who don’t follow Juve proper in Serie A💡

Are you talking to me? I wasn’t the one who said anything about 5k. I just said midday kick offs aren’t good for crowds

You tend to fit more in when most of the ground is standing room.

Brilliant crowd!

Was going for Preston, tough night for Romero, some beautifully well worked chances there and they all seem to fall to him. By the end of the night I was like "crikey we are going to score....nope it's Romero". Don't know enough about him to know if he is just having an off night or isn't at the level Preston need
