Summer of Cricket thread

Is a batting belter now, if Gilkes can score a ton at a little over a run a ball. Joel Davies may come in for his brother, bats in the middle order and is a competent left arm slow bowler.
I take my hat off to Gilkes - superb innings!

Maybe a few skied pulls.

LNS in the wickets late yesterday. After injury curtailed his past two seasons the big fellar needs plenty of scalps from his nagging seamers in his next five matches to climb the pecking order. I still think he has international cricket ability.

Day 3

Lively opening spell from Chris Tremain. Just had Dwyer dropped at second slip.

The other NSW pace bowler, I don’t know, but he had Mac Wright trapped LBW - and big appeal for Uppal LBW.

Tremain looks superb!

Tremain looks Test class!
He is, have played Tests if it wasnt for the enduring partnership built by the Big 3.

Tremmers is looking good, just for god sake dont have a relapse of that strange nerve injury that kept him out of all cricket for last 12 months, after being top bowler the season previously. Pawson is the other opener, ACT, delisted from the Blues this season. When is Jack Nisbet returning from injury, he also missed most of lst yr, expecting from back stress.

I am dead against selectors using this almost habitual policy of picking youngsters to open or bat #3 . Lets debut Sam Konstas in Tests in the opening cauldron and destroy his career before it starts. Tom Dwyer is still 18/19 so no problem for him to open and kill his confidence. Ditto for the Blues Ryan Hicks who is a specialist keeper and will be used to batting lower. Likewise keeper Zac Curtain who is batting #3 in this match. Absolute madness.

I questioned the sudden escalation of Josh Hazlewoods hamstring injury, now reading a News Corp scribe describing it as a ''mysterious injury'' too after yesterday JH had his first bowl since the initial injury was announced and only a day after reports he was out of the Ashes. The whole incident is fishy to me.

While Gilkes dig may have looked more spectacular, Davies was the better one as he painstakingly anchored the innings allowing Gilkes to play his natural game. I never realized Davies was this good. Shipperd choose him for the Blue over his brother who has crash and burned.

There is too much experience in the Blues attack for this young/green Tassie side. After a steady start to lunch, the wheels have fallen off since. Tom Dwyer top score with an unlucky 49. T o win this the Apple Islanders will need Neil-Smith to emulate his effort with the willow for his club side, a lazy 174..

Very impressed with Pawson! Bowled with fire, had good line and moved the ball!

There was another shortish, black haired NSW paceman, who bowled with number 16 or 15 on his back, not Peter Francis, running in from the Eastlands end (the opposite end from the water where I was watching with a mate) who really bent his back and bowled a fiery, accurate spell after tea.

It was good to watch! He really had the Tassie batters hurrying their shots and ducking some hostile short balls. He might have replaced the injured Tremain - who also bowled very impressively.

Tas might have cleaned up in the Shield with an impressive achievement of 3 centurions in Sydney, but NSW second eleven dominated the entire game I saw at Kangaroo Bay. The playing surface is immaculate.

Lawrence Neil-Smith bowled well and batted well, but not sure about any other Tas players putting their hand up for Shield duties? LNS will be in the next Tassie Shield squad. There was a Tassie finger spinner who bowled well, wth loop, whose name I didn't know?

Tassie's Vince made 87 in the first dig. Impressive, but he failed in the second dig.

Waited until late today to have a look at Louis Smith batting who came in at 9. He looked to have a good defence, played some good shots against spinners, but got himself out for 21. If LS is an all rounder, not sure why he batted at 9 after Neil-Smith and Kieran Elliot?

Agree Dwyer was patient, Baggers. Only saw the start of the Dwyer innings of 49, as I left at lunch and didn't get back till 2.40pm ish. He was scratchy at the start.

This game was played in a very good spirit, as second eleven games are more for selectors evaluating prospective Shield players, as opposed to one state beating another state. Had some friendly chats with quite a few players on the boundary.

Really appreciate more very high quality red ball cricket - live. These second eleven Aus state teams would have to be at least as good as the second tier county comp in England.

NSW's depth is impressive. Despite being handled poorly, no wonder so many NSW players move interstate. I'm sure Pawson and the black haired NSW pace bowler, would walk into most other Shield teams. Despite Richie being frustrated with him, Gilkes batted very well for a big ton too.

A lot of pedestrians came up to talk to us, quite inquisitive to find out who was playing?

Tom Dwyer only being 18 or 19 augurs well for the future then, Baggers.

Tassie's current openers, particularly, Caleb Jewell tends to try and blast attacks into oblivion. Didn't see his strike rate against NSW, but he can be impatient and has plenty of big boundary shot artillery.

I think Dwyer was a patient right hander, which the Tas Shield team could use. Weatherald, Jewell and Ward are all lefties.
