Rivalry Watch

Minamino has done his ACL and will miss the WC.

Japan playing Scotland in a friendly at Hampden Park on March 28th local time, which will be the first time they've played there. Scotland also playing Curacao in May ahead of the World Cup in a second friendly at the same venue.

FFS - 15 players !
I had a rant in another thread about Development not long ago and the state of our system - the above is what happens when you invest in your system and set up for the future as we know about Japan.
Now watch many other Asian opponents that we know are investing for the future far far better than us.
Thanks Quicky good intel to see and deflating at the same time haha

All true. But only having baseball as a competitor sure does help. Baseball may be number one in terms of money, media coverage, viewers etc (like AFL in Aus), but in terms of participation it’s football over baseball.

well - not sure about that entirely kw.
We can all look up various top 5/10 Japan sports ranking sites and find Baseball this Football that..
Baseball isn't the only, Sumo is huge as I'm sure you know and no doubt the top 3 would be
Baseball - one site quotes 42.5% fav to population
Sumo 27.3% next fav
Football 25% next fav
Then another quotes in ranking
Baseball - Unquestionably the most popular, with immense viewership and high participation across all age groups.
Football - The second most popular, with significant viewership and a strong J.League following.
Sumo - As the national sport, it maintains deep cultural significance and high, consistent viewership.

Fact of the matter is Jap has baseball, another country has another bigger code and another and another - talking about here, a sporting nation ethic, no matter the eggball, we are miles behind plain and simple considering so many people here think we are so good.
IMO were are ok/solid/organised/average in all honesty as much as it hurts me saying so, it is what it is.
Where our players are playing right now and the last how many years are nothing, nothing like them - not one in top flight playing regular week week starting line up.
Oh Circati in SerieA if I'm right off the top of my head.

Sumo is huge and is the Japanese national sport, but participation is probably less than 0.01% of the population and there aren’t Sumo tournaments every weekend, I think there are 6 a year.
I’m not saying you are wrong about Sumo and baseball, it’s just that having baseball and sumo as competition is a lot different to having AFL, NRL, cricket, rugby, tennis and so on as competitors as we do in Australia.
It also comes down to “national character”, which is a huge generalisation, but the Japanese are known for planning, precision, being meticulous and so on. In Australia we definitely aren’t as good as the Japs.
I’d also imagine that the Japanese government are fully behind football, which is very different to the situation in Aus!
Both Japan and China’s governments have stated their plans in place to win the World Cup. Yeah ok Japan are well ahead of China but China will one day improve. Australia’s government? No interest, they have no interest unless it’s the rugby/cricket World Cup.
I lived in Japan for 3.5 years, and China for 20 years.

yes KW I understand - have some understanding your background and your right with the summary.
I also have alot of travelling background all round Asia without living there I've been to China some 40times, Japan near enough and other parts of Asia.
I get it and read local papers/news - yep both Govs have put in the sport whereas ours nothing/bugger all - not new we know and a huge setback that in the early days wasn't evident but modern days now its gonna hurt.
I don't think China will get there actually imo - maybe next century but not even worth mentioning for now.
Put aside the lack of gov funding - its our heads in the sand Governance that is 50% holding us back !
No matter the other codes that are pecking anything they can like us - DO something about it instead of clipping the ticket ! make peace with the APL/tippy toe here there with Feds/PFA etcetc....
Farkin DO something - Muz and I in a political thread talked about "poking the bear" sick and tired of all these excuse's one from our FA next from fellow supporters.
Ah its ok we qualified for the 6th WC, lets settle on the Roo/Tilda gravey train, keep APL happy for we have a brickwall till '34 yaddayadda.
In the meantime lets keep staying behind the 8ball.
Marvel at attendence figures.
Farkin load of bollocks.

You will get shut down by skeptics LFC dont bother, Adam Peacock's article on football360 perfectly explains our problems but too many have got their hands in the sands because 'eW gOt AfL and nRL attitude especially what I see from reddit lol.

We can forget creating another GG if the environment doesn't change, the players either cant handle the workload or they dont have the attitude or ability full stop.

As someone that's been in Europe over the winter its almost like chalk and cheese compared to what we do here in Australia on almost every aspect of football, the potential is here but we got some much to work on its not funny.

We have 3 players in B1 (Irvine, Metcalfe, Bos) compared to 15 with Japan, but also have 1/5 of the population of Japan?

At the same time, if we could do something about our players leaving too early (Kuol, Italiano or Peupion etc); players choosing other nations (Triantis, Volpato) and players getting injured soon after moving (list is endless but Good, Ibini, Arzani, Sainsbury, Mattthews, Farrell and Botic to name a random few over the years), we could be on the way to a lot more players in significant leagues too.

Thanks PLC,
From my perspective you just proved some of my rant Thankyou.
Bos in B1 with Circarti at S/A we all rate and have high hope importantly they have been noticed - please please kick on !
Metcalfe yep but not to the 2 I've mentioned but yep he's at least there.

The pop diff is not though - Aussie, the land that punchs above its weight.
We have had champions across many different diciplines over decades but as others countries large or small have "improved" their system we have gone down the ladder, tennis and other sports, if it wasn't for eggball dominance - ie NRL - AFL well no one else plays it - Union others have invested we went backwards.
Cricket, won the recent Ash's but overall we are not as dominate as we used to be - why, systems/lack of 2nd level competition and development.

IF I was Volpato's/Triantis's parents what would you advise your kids after all the years of fighting in our football system ?
Tell me, I have lived/breathed it, as a player and then supporting 2 sons.
I'd hazard to guess what their parents had enough of let alone the fellas.

As for injuries, well some are injury prone some not, others say our players are not battle hardened - not enough games at Jnr levels.
Injuries are an excuse because we have so so few in the talent pool for IF there was we could replace those budding up and comers with the ones who missed out.

Lot more players in significant leagues ?
Talk to Arnie/Foster/Bozza/Slater/Dukes/Moore etcetc.....I'm sure they could set the record straight for we've been going back and forth over this for 20yrs and some.
