The gap gets bigger as you go up in the pyramid, as evident by the FA Cup where you get the odd few cupsets where teams placed lower in the table or even in lower divisions beat teams above them in the lower leagues (League One and below). It’s also why usually at least one promoted team gets relegated back to the Championship after a season in the Premier League (last season it was Burnley and the two seasons before that all three went back down), whereas in the lower tiers it becomes more and more likely for promoted teams to stay up.
