I saw a global league table of cafe coffee prices a while back and Australia is actually quite competitive on pricing....

Sitting in the middle to affordable compared to many other developed countries.

Definitely when compared to seeing some prices in pounds and Euros. Germany is being played for fools. Retail coffee way higher per kg compared to shops in the UK. We stock up when we go to the UK. Around 35% cheaper per kg.

Australia's coffee market is maybe more competitive, there's definitely a more independent cafe culture in Australia...

Where I live there's 4 or 5 little coffee shops within a 2 minute walk.

Then 1km up the road there's the main shopping precinct that would have to be about 10 or 12 coffee shops within a minutes walk of each other!

A few are chains but most are independent and when you have so many clustered so tightly it forces every cafe to fight hard for the same morning and weekend traffic.

That'd be a typical scenario for everyone around the traps probably.

Customers can (and do) vote with their feet over a 50-cent difference, a better pour, or just friendlier service. That pressure keeps most operators from pushing prices as high as they might elsewhere in the world.

Most of the independent coffee shops I go to around here are really good at and seem to care about what they do, I feel bad sometimes walking past one to go to another!

I don't think it's very difficult to figure out.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a coffee price in Brisbane starting with a 4.
Sounds more of a function of competiveness than market forces personally.

In Sydney, coffee is EVERYWHERE. The market has driven the prices down, you can get a servo piece of shit machine dispensed coffee for 2 dollars if the place is grungy enough, will it be good? No. Will be do the job etc. Yes. Or you can go to a while collar financial district cafe where 5 will be an absolute minimum but I've yet to see one over 6 anywhere. Due to people having options in every suburb without exception.

Those 711 2 buck ones as you said serve the purpose better than you expect actually.
Even Macca’s when on the run drive through - when I have yanky visitors being they are used to utter rubbish coffee they are impressed

Noticed a dip on German retail coffee the past weeks so supply must be up. Bit of a scramble for people to buy a lot while it's down.

Let's jut rename this the beverage thread!
