I've never understood this pejorative.

This is aimed at rich people having empathy for poor people.

Surely if you have money it's better to care about those less fortunate and agitate for change than to sniff at the 'poor' for not being able 'to pull themselves up by their bootstraps'.

I'm fairly well off. By every metric I've seen online I too am a champagne socialist. Am I not meant to care about others now I have money?

He wouldn't have the brains to reel them in. Apart from everything else in his fucked up life he gets a criminal solicitor to represent him in a defamation case against two of the most accomplished defamation barristers in Australia.....

As for Zali Burrows, she couldn't even articulate basic defamation arguments and taking this case isn't going to do her future career prospects much good. I mean if I'm a criminal looking for a brief, I'm definitely giving her a swerve....

Association with Lehrmann is toxic and not just talking about his various rape charges. He's a fucking walking disaster!!

I get this. I think that socialists can have a myriad of lifestyles and still be genuine socialists.

My dad came from a family of railway workers from Gateshead in the North East of England. A very working class town.

He went to university, the first in his family and got a decent job with the civil or what Australia calls the public service in England. But his passion was workers rights and he became heavily involved in the union movement, eventually evolving into a high ranking union official. Very much on the hard left of the union movement too...

He deplored the notion of the 'champagne socialist' (for Australia read chardonnay socialist) which by the 1980/90's had totally engulfed the British Labour Party and was constantly snearing at them. But my mother would often challenge him because at the same time he was taking quite a large salary in his job...

He was the archetypical champagne socialist himself. Nice house, nice car, foreign holidays...

I don't think the term champagne or chardonnay socialist actually really exists...It’s a bit of a misnomer.

It's like a term opponents of socialism like to aim at certain individuals on the left who have enjoyed comfortable, financially well off lives in order to belittle their ways. Almost like it's some sort of crime! Or a divide and conquer strategy used to undermine....

It is possible that you can do well in life and still have a social conscience.

Kerry Stokes is having a bad run. Wasted millions on Ben Roberts Smith and now this idiot.

I think it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Lehrmann is a bit of a pawn for the right and their attack on any and everything 'woke'. Why they decided to back him to the tune of millions is bizarre.

Yep and inversely the other side of the political media spectrum overly backing Brittany Higgins.

I know she's absolutely the victim in all of this in terms of the rape but you do get the feeling that she's been a little bit toxic in terms of her public persona too.

She allowed herself to be manipulated by the 'chardonnay socialists' (haha wanted to get that in) Lisa Wilkinson and her husband. Something that has probably cost Wilkinson her tv career and more importantly it possibly stopped Bruce Lehrmann getting a long deserved jail sentence, at least in a round about way....

I mean going public about the rape in the way she did was a huge mistake. Lehrmann’s trial for the alleged rape of Higgins was delayed after Wilkinson’s Logies speech in which she thanked Higgins. Then came the jury issues It was all handled so badly.


Just an opinion but I always had the feeling that the entire Ch10 episode was more framed to make everyone in the LNP look bad rather than exposing a rapist for being a rapist....

I think most take an issue with your last example. It's the ones who preach something but shrug their shoulders when a policy doesn't work.

Visit the protest for the photo but hardly care about the cause.

Forget his name but some wealthy bloke in Berlin puts on a Christmas meal for thousands every year for the less fortunate with all the gourmet you can imagine. I think that's the way people like it.

At least we know the conservatives don't care about the general person. That's probably better than the other bunch that pretend to and just have excuses when it doesn't work. Rinse and repeat.

I'm no fan of Iran and especially no fan of 'The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' but would they really be that stupid to directly organise an attack Jewish organisations on foreign soil?

And ASIO have certainly reached this conclusion fairly quickly too...

Seems a bit convenient.

I thought it was one of these Pro-Palestinian hard line left wing groups or conversely one of far right groups that are popping up everywhere.

The actual attacks seemed pretty rudimentary in terms of their actual effectiveness.

Hamas without Iran and Qatar money wouldn't exist so yeah they would all things considered. Also Israel just conducted some very extensive airstrikes against Iran it isn't outside the realm of possibility.
