Apparently the cost of building large oval shaped cricket-like grounds in places like the US, Asia and mainland Europe would restrict the AFL's ability to expand into these territories....
They could use existing rectangular stadiums to showcase AFL tonnew audiences and all of that...
I was never really sure if the guy was being serious.
But AFL has never changed it's rules to suit rectangular grounds and never expanded beyond Australia bar the odd amateur park competitions in the UK and places like that.
