it goes back to league placing since Newcastle Jets did the double every other country in the Asian Football Confederation has done this as well i spoke to Iranian based AFC journalist Erfan Hoseiny confirmed during March international break saying cup runner up is not eligible for AFC club competition only the cup winners.

The updated AFC Club Competition Regulations are out.

They're increasing the max spots per country from four to six! Unlikely to ever affect us. But if we earn a fourth spot, we'll need to have at least 12 Australian clubs in the A-League to actually receive that fourth spot.

Turns out i was right.

Rule 6 club licensing criteria confirms only within top domestic league and has officially sealed Melbourne Victory's place back in Asia for next season in ACL Two in the updated AFC Club competition regulations as of Thursday April 30th (yesterday) in accordance with the AFC Club Licensing Regulations.

Its that rule and rule 7.4 in the sporting criteria part which is the top six (50%) Australian based clubs in the final league rankings in the top division league that are eligible to compete in AFC club competitions for 2026/27 season.
