"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

From my perspective I doubt many of the general public if asked on the street who is Ellie Carpenter would straight out say yep without some hints.
NSW/Qld general public asked who is Mary Fowler a good % will know due to her BF NRL fella.
Whats unfortunate of aflw nrlw not having sellouts - its woeful viewing no wonder the seagulls are the metrics.

As for that major eggball game not caring about us - yer right, whenever something good reported re football/sockah next moment there's something of theirs reported to take the thunder.
We unique - that admin has had the high ground forever and they plan to keep it that way therefore you do keep an eye on your competitors common practice.
There would be a majority of the NSW/QLD people that could name a number of footballers, such as Sam Kerr but could not name one current AFL player male or female.

AFL comes on the news and people go and get a coffee or go to the loo. Who cares if Joe Bloggs hurt his toenail in a January training accident or even understand what a draft is. People don't care. I worked for a number of years for a major sponsor of the Swans and could access tickets for free. Never went to a game. Only people that went to games with the free tickets were Victorians working in Sydney.

Australian rules was a low tier suburban game primarily in the Hills District. In many ways it has not really progressed except in terms of boardroom pull with government.

That alone makes it our problem.

I think most people in NSW understand that but people in Victoria thinks Swans & Lions are huge here, which they are not.
I'd say they think as such due to the crowd numbers yet you hardly know people talk about the stupid game.
A ex vic pat influenced a couple of friends to go the swannies (< christ it makes me puke) to them its a day out typically "event" kind of trait.

Exactly. Those teams have done well to carve out a niche but ordinary people in Sydney and Brisbane are not really following them closely.

AFL is lucky they have a lot of institutional power to preserve their status but their future growth as a code is limited. Demographics don't look great for them either.

The only afl players name i know is mcluggage because it stuck in my head as a funny name

I'd say Ellie is less well-known than the other two but given most of the country watched the WWC in 2023 I would say at least half know her being a key player.

Another I forgot to mention is Hayley Raso who is one of my personal favourites. Met her multiple times before, she's a good person too.

Sorry still don’t think many people would pass the pub test.
Your into it and we the small community know but the bulk - yer nah.

Kerr would definitely be known by any sports follower. Carpenter probably not. Kerr would probably be better known at the moment than any current Socceroo

Correct and she’s the only 1 really known full stop !
The rest well so few little here little there.

The four I mentioned are the ones I get asked about the most by non-football fans/casual football fans. But most people I know watch at least some kind of sport.

Just out of curiosity why do you hate Aussie rules so much? Personally I don't mind it.

But if you think Aussie rules is small in Sydney then you should go to the North Coast (north of Newcastle, south of Tweed Heads). League is massive, soccer is in the mix but mostly national team stuff, but Aussie rules is almost as niche as A-League/Euro leagues or NBL/NBA.

Not answering for LFC, but I am, we are both old blokes from Sydney with ethnic backgrounds, we love sport & were brought with Football (our Dads & playing) Cricket, Rugby league & Surfing (our Aussie mates), Aussie rules was always Victorian football to us.
It's not hate, it's a sport & we have no issues with sport, but what gets our little goatee (grumpy old men) going is the AFL admin & the media making out how big AFL is ( yes we know it's the biggest sport in the world in 3 states), but outside of that (ok I give you NT & Tassie too) it's a niche sport.

*McCluggage, for what little it’s worth😏

Believe it or not, I’d actually never heard of him before your post - but then again he plays for Brisbane Lions, so that explains it.
yep agree - never heard of this bloke - I thought is this some kind of encrypted joke I won't get from intelect Graz hahaha

Exactly all this; the AFL has this warped(& fatally-wrong) mindset that it can somehow realistically appeal to 🇦🇺 north of the Barassi Line w/this bullish nativist-narrative of “If you’ve no interest in Our Indigenous Game™, then you just aren’t a real Aussie”🤣🤣

my fellow much older mate robbos haha yes you did answer for me you couldn't help not doing so lol - has covered pretty much why/where/what about that over rated eggball game......if you don't mind it good luck to you I really don't get the appeal whatsoever.
I know all too well nrl's reach between the 2 States involved.
Wouldn't agree afl is niche due to its $ and numbers, its no1 niche not sure - euro football following is prob bigger than AL/NBL/NBA combined possibly ? though it no matter this isn't the point.

my fellow much older mate robbos haha
Wow, you must be hurting!!!!
I sit in the corner with my mates, not saying much, just occasionally muttering a few words, "what is Klopp doing these days, he's free"
