"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

Mate NRL and AFL are both fighting each other tooth and nail to be Australias #1 sport... AFL goes to China, NRL goes to Vegas, NRL goes to Pacific islands, AFL goes to Tasmania... its All one upmanship to get the biggest slice of the revenue dollar... they dont care, either one of them, about Australian representation or world acceptance, they just want to make more and more money and take the lions share of the pie ... The days of AFL worrying about soccer in this country, let alone even knowing it exists, are looooong gone. Both NRL and AFL are way to big to notice us. Any of us.
That's what I try to tell you when it's npl vs a league we're arguing about who's worse when both of us are in a pretty shite position because of the admin

The NRL goes to Vegas and gets next to no coverage in America. It is all about the gambling money and travel from Australia. China and the AFL is a joke. A couple of hundred ex pats turn up on the Austrade bill.

Australia apparently were favourites for a Japanese meat contract and Austrade thought a Sherrin for the Japanese PM would be a good idea. Argentina instead sent a signed and framed Messi shirt. Guess who won

Yeah the AFL in China was (doesn't happen anymore) giving in to a shitty communist government that doesn't respect human rights while the NRL in Vegas is for gambling money. Both are unethical ways to make a shit ton of money.

I disagree Mono; they hate us⚽ and want to see us exterminated off the face of Australia, same as it's ever been. The only difference, and even then it's not much of one, is that they personally don't get their hands dirty in this endeavour to the extent that they used to - they know they can count on their sycophant bogan-media to do it for them instead:

Frankly Speaking said:
Personally, I think the situation has got much, much worse here over the past decade. I don't think it is indulging in far-fetched conspiracy theories to suggest that the main media groups, with their direct financial interest in other football codes, have orchestrated a strategy of burying association football.

I get the point you’re making, but I def wouldn’t phrase it like that.
I started a thread about this on 442.

Every survey I looked at cricket had 2.6 billion global followers, with football having 3.5 or 4 billion followers at number 1.

Basketball and hockey were next with 2 billion apiece, with one source claiming basketball only having 1 billion.

So why football struggles to get significant media profile in Aus is baffling?

Not to mention gov’t funding, despite attempts(feeble as they are) to get our pollies onside:

But as we’ve seen, all that comes of it are mere photo-ops(as above) and laughable attempts@ sporting-diplomacy w/Sherrin footies in direct competition w/signed Messi jerseys..🙃

You do need to differentiate the difference between Football & the top tier level football in this country.

You just need to look at pre 2005 the lowest ebb of the NSL, not that the NSL had any heights & then 2005/06 happened with Socceroos & football was huge in this country. Likewise the A-league has been struggling now for 5-6 years & suddenly 2022 WC & women's WC in Australian in 2023, suddenly Australia was football mad again.
Now the fact that Football admin in this country has never been able to take advantage of these gifts is another issue. Not only only accepting gifts, but throw them back into the face of us fans.
I can assure you that Football (NOT A-LEAGUE) is far bigger than AFL (the sport) in Sydney. Yes AFL (competition) is bigger than A-league, no doubt, but most people in Sydney would have better idea of who Ronaldo & Messi are than any AFL player.
As for your reference about AFL to China & NRL to US, that is so small it's not funny & Tasmania & Pacific Islands, the slice of revenue is tiny. Sam Kerr & Mary Fowler are far bigger than any NRLW or AFLW players.
Don't believe in your Melbourne media.

Now if you are talking about A-League I agree, if you talking about Football, no way do I agree.

In most countries football is an international sport and a grassroots sport with little glamour for the top domestic league. Not saying that things cant be better, but i think we have unrealistic expectations for what a top division looks like. Even if we had p and r tomorrow, that would make a difference in the long run but i dont think the a league becomes a genuine rival of nrl or afl.

Yep 100% agree. hence my point when comparing to the big sports in this country, we differentiate between A-League to Football.

Lol, sounds more like a prison than an "advantage"!

Fun fact the AFL has only ever had one player who was entirely developed in Aussie rules overseas before coming here. Hewago Oea is his name, he used to play for the Gold Coast Suns and he represents PNG internationally. No idea what happened to him but he only played for the Suns from 2022 until 2024. He won VFL Player of the Year for the Suns in 2024.

I agree about football being bigger than Aussie rules in Sydney, especially since we're such a multicultural city and Aussie rules is really an Aussie game (with only Australia, Ireland (since Gaelic footballers come here because the GAA is semi-pro and the AFL is pro), Nauru (where it's the national sport), NZ and PNG (the two most successful national teams since Australia doesn't have one) even playing it that much and knowing what it is).

Speaking of well-known players, of all the players in the world, which ones would at least half of the Australian population know of? I would say Sam Kerr is the most well-known and everyone knows who she is, but who else? And this is any footballer by the way, even those who are also well-known here for other things (e.g David Beckham).

Yeah I think most people know who Ellie Carpenter, Mary Fowler, Sam Kerr, etc are. I would even argue that pretty much anyone in the World Cup squad or the next Asian Cup squad is more well-known than AFLW or NRLW players. The Tillies sell out stadiums, AFLW and NRLW don't (unfortunately).

I assumed that whole "Aussie Rules being 🇳🇷‘s national-sport" thing was just an exaggerated psy-op by the AFL back in the mid-‘90s. Alas, it’s legit and ⚽️ on the island has been in a continuous paralysis because of it😔

I agree with you on the differences between pro league here and football globally.. More than 100% agree, football has never been more popular...

From my perspective I doubt many of the general public if asked on the street who is Ellie Carpenter would straight out say yep without some hints.
NSW/Qld general public asked who is Mary Fowler a good % will know due to her BF NRL fella.
Whats unfortunate of aflw nrlw not having sellouts - its woeful viewing no wonder the seagulls are the metrics.

As for that major eggball game not caring about us - yer right, whenever something good reported re football/sockah next moment there's something of theirs reported to take the thunder.
We unique - that admin has had the high ground forever and they plan to keep it that way therefore you do keep an eye on your competitors common practice.
