2025 Australia Cup final rounds thread

Imo nrl in Sydney and afl in Melbourne aren’t equivalent. Afl is a much more important cultural component of life in Melbourne than nrl is in Sydney. In Sydney if you don’t follow or care about nrl, you can easily forget it exists. In Melbourne you cannot ignore the presence of afl, particularly if you are a bloke, it’s an ever present. It is the mainstream male culture of the city as I’ve said before
110% spot on, exactly this. Even in the off season, afl is still everywhere, something always happening to have afl the talking point of the town.

Dont bother .... these Sydneysiders have a real chip on their shoulder about anything Melbourne related.... They are the Oakleigh to our Hellas....
Not my first run in with them don't worry. I know you don't like/care for a league, but go talk football with a Sydney fc die hard and you'll see why i dislike Sydney fc a hell of alot more then South.

It's actually crazy. Visited Melbourne last November but everything was still AFL. Its in the DNA, just like football in Brazil etc.

Awesome as a AFL fan, but must be crap if you don't like it.

Sydney and NRL is nothing like what AFL is to Melbourne.

For mine AFL is probably the most uniquely Melbourne “thing”. On a global stage a big afl game at the MCG is probably one of the only things which “could only be in Melbourne”. An international point of difference. All the other things Melbourne is known for can also be found elsewhere

Which ones are the worst, the ones that changed over to WSW or the ones that made the second jump to Macarthur?

sure, "versions of" but there is only ONE Melbourne Cup, One Australian Open, ONE Australian Grand Prix, ONE NPL VIC Grand final...

Get ready for a controversial one; Melbourne defines its identity within the context of Australia (vs Sydney and the rest). Sydney defines itself within/vs the context of the world
Yeah Ill go along with that.... Most Yanks, probably still think Sydney is Australia's capital city....

I reckon that was true, but is now gradually changing, albeit slowly. Personally I have no idea what's going on in the AFL. Couldn't tell you who's on top. Couldn't name a current player. I don't watch FTA, don't watch the news and I have spent a good amount of time filtering out any AFL stuff from my feeds. I reckon that took a good 3-4 years of making the effort to click 'not interested in' on any AFL item. If you are an adult male living in Melbourne, the algorithm definitely shoves it down your throat. Nobody actively follows it at work, and majority of my close friends and family follow what we and the rest of the world call football. I get the occasional small talk conversation with a work client here and there, but that's really about it. When I get asked "who d'ya follow in the footy?" I've even started replying with "nobody, I don't follow it.", which is absolutely true. I reckon it's actually true of a lot more people in Melbourne than it appears. We've been conditioned to say we follow a particular AFL team, but it all depends on how you define follow. Many people in Melbourne will say they follow a particular team, but never go to a game and never watch on TV and barely keep up with the results.

No doubt the landscape is changing re the shift in media consumption. Tbh there’s much less of a mainstream culture in general these days globally. Has coincided with a decline in mainstream media. Everyone is increasingly becoming siloed into little niches in every aspect of life. Particularly younger generations.

Also in Melb newer migrant waves from places like India and china haven’t adopted afl in the same way Italians and Greeks did

For me, you split both cities in two and join - it's one of the greatest places in the world.

Both do different things good.
