High Volpato Voltage

It'll be interesting if volpato plays for us in the Asian cup. I have my suspicion he just joined us late to play in the world cup
Why would he turn it down? He’s permanently cap-tied to us now and from all reports he actually does wanna be a Socceroo. If he turned down an Asian Cup call-up he’d be turning down the only other type of tournament he could physically play in.

It's a fair point and it'd be pretty unlikely at the moment. If he were to shy away I'd be very frustrated.

The next windows will be the test as it's in club season and the back and forth travel will be required.

Well what happens happens - I think this will if and when the time comes test or more show us the relationship between gaffa and player.
If he can’t grasp poppa ball and feels he hasn’t got the game time he expects he may think yer nup.
Just giving a hypothetical.

He has spoken how proud he is having the Roo shirt - had a tear so maybe we’re all talking crap.

Asian cup doesn't have same ring to it as the world cup. We'll find out if his all in as a socceroo in the next few months

There are still rules regarding a player refusing a call up in an international window (and the Asian Cup is one of those windows). Regardless of any sanctions if a player doesn't want to play for us I think that's up to him and I wouldn't force him to play for us. I think this discussion is merely hypothetical.

Not hard to feign an injury, especially with a sympathetic club physio.

You're more forgiving then most people see what we're saying if and I hope it doesn't happen but I'm getting tomic vibes from the bloke

I imagine it'll take a bit to win you over because you were one of his biggest critics through is international allegiance saga.

Personally I don't see the point in wasting energy or angst on a 'what-if' and agonising over it likes its real.

I dunno I'm just another idiot with an opinion most of what we say on here is what if though

Interesting details in this. The time line doesn’t support him cracking it when he didn’t get in the Italy squad. Seems to have been in the works earlier than that.

His name was submitted to FIFA in hope by the FA in the initial World Cup squad before they even knew if he had committed.

Also it seems it was Okon who had been been meeting with him and cultivating these kinds of relationships with dual internationals. He speaks about his son, and the pressure on young Aussies in Europe not to choose Australia.

I'd say Circati has been the biggest background influence imo mind you Okon would have the understanding/condute as well considering the sons.
Some real world ethnic challenges that many do not understand its not as easy as black and white.
Great it worked out in the end, the kids potential is for all to see and to think he got punted by the 2 AL clubs.

Interesting article, one of the criticism of the coaches/Popa regarding the other dual nationals was the behind the scenes work. But Okon was essentially doing exactly what everyone wanted behind the scenes. The criticism of the FA seems more reasonable, this work is only being done by the coaching staff.

The point about 'selling the shirt' is interesting. It can mean a lot of different things. Popa seems to be happy to go and chat to anyone, but his version of not selling the shirt is never any guarantee about selection or playing time. That seems about right. Overall I would prefer if there was someone outside the direct coaching team doing this work.

If Okon was working behind the scenes on Volpato why wasn't Jedinak doing the same for Segecic in England?
fair point - different for every individual I suppose.
Who knows approached - by who, how/when, were they the right fit to talk our case.
He must have felt let down here about something and you get an offer ? we all got to make up your mind.
A lot comes down to the smarts of the person trying to convince a massive train of thought. ?

Without knowing the real facts I really was pissed about Farina and the Zelic situation for him to walk and in our camp in the the first place.
Personality clashs ??
