"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

Yer to me it proves the Aussie event tag we mention a lot.
Obviously NRL has deep rooted itself right round the country even though x states not hard on supporters but host the biggest of theirs and market it for how long now event goers jump on the show.
Yes there is ex pats south and storm support but the event goers make up the balance.
Similar to LIV in Adelaide.
Been massive crowds event goers on the piss but have a regular golf comp crickets barring our major Open.

It wasnt really advertised around town but it DOES get good attendance, I think AFL doesnt care because it is on during the week usually and AFL attendence rates are so strong nothing can shake them down here...
 
No much adverting but it got near on sell out.
My point was that after all the years of marketing g it is getting g traction by the crowd sizes nowadays.

Yer look to me I’m not fussed or care but for our game.
I did notice whilst Roos on Sunday that afl games didn’t get great attendance that arvo in the press or in here reported.
Anyway both those codes can suck it as far as I’m concerned

I think from 2005 - 10, League and AFL feared football.

Then there was a period where the Lowy regime fixated on securing the WC for Aus. Meanwhile, T20 cricket and women’s AFL increased in popularity, whilst football imploded a bit with the AL owners winning the battle and losing the war to control the AL.

If the Murdoch tabloids and ABC TV are any guide, football coverage has declined regarding domestic football.

Tas ABC TV only covers AFL both genders, T20 cricket both genders, Test cricket both genders, now Tas NBL basketball. Football only WCs and Matildas and Roo home games, with Tillies more popular.

Cairns or Queensland ABC TV has a lot more rugby league men coverage, still plenty of AFL, but AFL has less coverage than league, with no basketball.

Of course they are covering the WC all of a sudden, with the Roos winning against T.

As soon as the WC is over, domestic football will disappear again.

I’m assuming the ABC is a barometer of public Aus support for football.

As you say, domestic football doesn’t seem to be sexy with politicians and corporate sponsors.

Our own vast majority of football supporters who are Eurosnobs doesn’t help either. These are the umpteen thousands who will turn up to watch big UEFA club friendlies in the off-season, but rarely follow Aus football.

I am pissed off at the ABC because they really don't report anything on the A-League. Early morning news - nothing but they will put something which has much lower attendance or importance on. Ever since the ABC got taken over by the Sydney mafia, the Melbourne listeners have had to put up with absolute crap.

And when I was at the office last Monday, me telling people that Patrick Beach does the same thing week in week out for Melbourne City, they were stunned.

So I doubt the NRL will ever fear football however the AFL are a strange bunch, Changing game times for matches to go head to head with Socceroo games is weird and when Australia wanted to host the World Cup they went apesh!t on not wanting there grounds to be used for any matches. Oh and Eddie saying the Womens World Cup in Australia would be a lemon.

They see Football as an existential threat to Aussie Rules, and they're right to do so.

AFL had a cult-like grip over Melbourne for a century but it's hard to keep that up when people can open their phone and see actual skilled athletes from around the world, without leaving their home. They have to play dirty to survive.

Victoria had higher then expected TV viewing figures which is a first for a none AFL game. The NRL did promote the sh1t out of it down there going by 9 News. With Victorians favouring QLD in add promotions.

We are our own worst enemy at local competition level.
However, on the international stage, we have lots for them to fear, the World cup, the Olympics, the Matildas, the O/S sides.
I have always said, yes the other codes dont fear thr A-League but they do football.

Im not sure its just the advertising.. People here have this FOMO about events... The MCG will pack out for the Rugby one night a year but the rest of the season Storm gets fairly tiny crowds compared to AFL... Just like thousands packing Federation square to watch the Socceroos... 3/4 of them dont know the rules or any of the players and wont watch a match (here OR overseas) once Australia gets bundled out...at least for another 4 years.
