"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

We are our own worst enemy at local competition level.
However, on the international stage, we have lots for them to fear, the World cup, the Olympics, the Matildas, the O/S sides.
I have always said, yes the other codes dont fear thr A-League but they do football.

Well that doesnt help much considering these games are largely played on the other side of the world.

Im not sure its just the advertising.. People here have this FOMO about events... The MCG will pack out for the Rugby one night a year but the rest of the season Storm gets fairly tiny crowds compared to AFL... Just like thousands packing Federation square to watch the Socceroos... 3/4 of them dont know the rules or any of the players and wont watch a match (here OR overseas) once Australia gets bundled out...at least for another 4 years.
yer as I said - the "events" tag sits very well.
As for the Storm I know a melb mate who's into it - says at AAMI they avg 22k, that not bad in a state that is mostly against that game.

yer when you think about it.
Its 50/50 eh, many of our NT games are OS and then we either hold Friendlies or such as the WWC/Asian games.
Again few and far between.

Absolutely 22k is amazing, but AFL gets 4 x times that to 8 matches a weekend or whatever it is.

Exactly, you can mount the same arguments for the US and Canada. Is Ice Hockey really going to be afraid of the 6-0 game that just ended?

Our local sports of aussie rules and rugby league are provincial but they're local for 6 months of the year, the consistent exposure is unmatched. Yes the whole country wakes up at 5am tomorrow and watches next Friday but we've seen thos story before, once its done its trully done.

Dont we all lose the plot for tennis every January? Its the same thing.

yep, Americas Cup, Piastri F1 last year, whatever, IF we have a competitor in a big event we follow, then disappear go back to normal stations till next time.
Thats the football prob year in year out and people go on has the FA leveraged from now 6 time WC qualifying how successful.
Yes it is and $ wise for the FA but we just go back into the same recycle and rinse year after year.

The Asian cup in 2015 was not the other side of the world nor was the women's 2023 World cup.

Yes & I agree the administration of football is not strong & doesn't use these events as springboards for the local leagues. The administration of our sport has been weak ever since I started following the sport in the 1970s.
Unlike the 70s & 80s, people in this country can follow their favourite teams from around the world live (maybe some sleep deprivation) just like their were living there

Yes NRL (Queensland & NSW) & AFL (Vic, WA, SA, Tas & NT) are massive, but neither sport gets the attention of the whole country, unlike America (American Football, Baseball & Basketball) their local sports are huge all over.

A lot of people just want to be a part of something that's cool like in school it's not really anymore complicated then that I think.

Global football are events are cool a league and npl isn't

The Asian cup and Womens world cup are global events, bigger but still in the same bracket as the Australian Open Tennis, F1 grand prix etc. They all achieve the same thing, they come, they are a big deal whilst they are on, then they go.

AFL and NRL sticks.
Which is something we should change. We need people to follow along not just when the national teams are playing, but also when clubs are playing.

The State of Origin game tonight was at a sold out MCG something the Socceroo.s haven't done in there lifetime, And the ratings would have to be bigger then the world cup matches if not pretty close to it.
So I doubt the NRL will ever fear football however the AFL are a strange bunch, Changing game times for matches to go head to head with Socceroo games is weird and when Australia wanted to host the World Cup they went apesh!t on not wanting there grounds to be used for any matches. Oh and Eddie saying the Womens World Cup in Australia would be a lemon.
Well one thing for sure, Eddie was wrong about the 2023 Women's World Cup, that was a resounding success.

But I assume that most of the average 22K who attend Melbourne Storm games, are expat people from NSW and QLD, because let's be honest there is virtually no Rugby League culture in Melbourne.

Maybe, I know a few who are Melbournians that like the game... And plenty of Islanders as well of course...
Of all the Aussie rules places, the Riverina and Victoria have more rugby league than anywhere else, possibly even more than Broken Hill (you’ll notice with the Barassi Line that much of Western NSW is on the AFL side).

Riverina ( at least the south-eastern part of it) is very mixed.

Wagga is probably mostly Aussie Rules, but a bit of everything.
Griffith was very very much a football town - at least until about 5 years ago.

As was pointed out way earlier in this thread, the multimillion-$ question is “How?” and furthermore, successfully doing so without further alienating the already-existing 🇦🇺⚽️ fanbase.
