Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

That is a fantastic squad that they have. Their main opposition is their own media and internal pressure, I used to binge watch their 3 24/7 football talk channels when I was over there.

Arrived in USA earlier last week. A surprising amount of our and Melbourne Victory/City jerseys in Los Angeles alone.
are the victory fans still insisting Langerak should be chosen over ryan?

The 2014 squad still had players like Cahill, Bresciano and Jedinak in it although I agree it competes for the weakest. This squad has a bit more potential than recent squads and hopefully none of these youngsters with potential have reached their peak yet.
These threads make me check what I thought I knew.
Bres was past his best and had been in the middle east since 2012. Cahill was the talisman but had moved to the MLS in 2012 (much weaker league back then) and moved to China after the world cup. Both 34. I don't know if they start?
Jedinak obvious walk up starter.
2014 Leckie and Milligan probably start.

Quite remarkable. 2014 the transition felt forced. These kids have just taken the spots .

Got to start Geria at RWB. The true tactic is he's not supposed to go high up anyway. Trewin didn't and only Italiano can. Bos is the attacker.

Start Devlin at LCM so he can cover when Bos goes forward. Geria in Irvine's side. Geria can come in and do a mature and professional job. He was excellent yesterday.

Geria at RWB is not ideal because he has never really been an attacking threat as a FB… but it could happen because Popa isn’t looking for that in a RWB.

In theory, when we are in possession, Bos could play as a winger and we revert to a back 4 and Geria pushes to RB.

Another option for RWB no one seems to be mentioning is Behich.

Langerak was the best keeper in the country in 2022 and we’re taking Argentina to extra time if he starts.

Yeah needs time to gel and get some minutes in his legs. I saw enough to believe he will be one of our best players with the ball at his feet.
Agree that Cristian Volpato needs to be getting game time so he can gel into the squad but he'll definitely be a fundamental part of the Socceroos forward line along with Mo Toure and Nestory Irankunda or whoever Popovic decides to put up front.

Satire? If not then why was he playing in the J1 League.

I do think his international career was too short given he played in the Bundesliga for many years but he wasn’t benching Maty Ryan.

He sat on the bench for years in the Bundesliga and was happy to take the money. Fair play to him. But he could have had a much better career.

That video with all his touches was illustrative. Only one stray pass. Drew two fouls. An excellent dead ball. Very good technique with his feet and vision with his passes. If he gets into a game watch out.

I watched Langerak in J League for Nagoya he was solid but he was terrible on foot. I still choose Ryan over him tho.

I thought Langerak at his peak was our best keeper and didn't get the chances his talent deserved.

Hell, I'm a Mariner but I've long known Maty has a howler in him - as he showed at multiple World Cup matches.

He left and didn't develop for years sitting on the bench in Germany. I think he made his choice. Our managers wanted to play out from the back - something he struggled with all his career.

Yes Maty has had some howlers - but so has Bosnich, Schwarzer and Kalac and Langerak in top 5 leagues (and for Australia). At his best Bosnich was the most talented but his record but he and Kalac's played for teams with much better defences over the years. Even Langerak as backup had a reasonable defence in front of him. Schwarzer for most of his career didn't and Ryan was never at a strong defensive team.

As a Socceroo keeper Maty and Mark have some very similar stats. As a top 5 keeper Schwarzer wins for me on longevity and difficulty over Bosnich's undoubted talent.

I'm judging them purely on my obsessive observation of all Australian keepers.

I rate Schwarzer way beyond any of the others. In fact, I'd rate Schwarzer as our greatest Socceroo. (Timmy next on impact; Harry next on talent - although Mooy is up there also.)

I can't rate Bosnich among this company because he never did well against top teams - like Ryan and Schwarzer did. Most of Bozza's matches were against minnows.

Given my avatar i think we share that obsession.
