Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

Tony didn't have much good to say about Volpato in the press-conference. Saying he really struggled physically, which is true but it didn't show too much, I think the whole team struggled physically in the first-half. Also, alerted that Volpato more than likely to be "thrown on with 10 minutes to go" in the group games.

More than likely, Irankunda, Metcalfe, Toure front three against Turkey. I don't mind it, but if we are chasing a game, I'm hoping Volpato can give us a good 30 minute stretch instead of "10 minutes at the end".
Popovic said Volpato's conditioning was off because he was late into the camp but had moments where his class shone through irrespective. That cross to Souttar back post was excellent.

I thought Volpato was pretty quiet but had zero service. We were sitting at under 30% possession for a lot of that first half. Thats pretty rough for a winger.

That's what's often overlooked with players. They get their chance and ad labelled as invisible but they're starved of service. There's not too much else they can do.

Okon meanwhile starts in midfield and is still invisible.

How about Bos on the right and Behich on left? Worth a try.
Probably better then the other way around which is something I'd considered.

Bos cutting in and linking up with Irankunda would be exciting.

Turks 4 v 0 Socceroos. The 1st half will kill us and it will be to little to late cum the 2nd half.
It’s always good knowing we never really had a chance so long as the boys put in a half decent performance save some thoughts going into the USA match.
I think we all need to just admit we are not on the same level of the teams in our group and our main focus should be to at least score 1 goal through out the 3 matches which will make it a success in my opinion.

As much as I like our young players coming up I do agree with you. It just feels like we are going to struggle. Our players are solid and the best batch we've had for a while but we are pretty far off as a team and tactically with Popa are very poor and lost.

That's just it, we have some great players but tactically we are so woeful. If we had any other coach I'd be optimistic we could get a win but this bull crap 1st half long ball defending deep doesn't even work as u seen with Switz side crave us up at the back in the 1st half.
Poppa has to go cum Asian Cup, Im sick of seeing our players on struggle street when they are so much better then that.
We have a good Socceroos squad but bad coach. Look Poppa did well to have us Qlfy for the world cup without going to the playoffs I give him credit for that. But that's it.
Irankunda cant win us games on his own and only give 40min to do so.
Anyone here thinking we are getting out of the group plz tell me Im wrong but facts are facts.

We lack a midfield and RB.

We lack a midfield and RB.
Without a midfield, we lack a team. Defence and counter-attack can only get you so far and clearly isn't sustainable for us. Our counter-attack hasn't got longevity or familiarity and our defence can be leaky and also restricts how we play and setup with the ball.

That's more because of Popovic's tactics and mixed signals. The players clearly hate it. We saw some moments in attack that looked like going off script and we can only hope the players take the initiative when they see it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Hand on heart, I would have never predicted the run we had in ‘22.

I’ve always maintained that as aspirational as it is to be a team that controls the ball, we simply don’t have the talent to do it against the top level and I’m thankful that Arnie changed that direction for us in World Cups and seemingly Poppa is continuing the trend.

my only worry is that whilst I’m happy to be proven otherwise, I’m concerned that our shape and pressing triggers out of possession are not at the elite level, and we will get sliced open in the first half/chase each game.

I hope I’m proven wrong though.

More than that, no one thought we would make it through the knock out games to make the world cup. I would doubt anyone who said they believed we would go through the group stage in 22.

The current style is essentially the same as Arnie ball. There are tactical, structural differences. But the concept is the same. Give nothing at the back, press hard, wait for the other side to present an opening.

Aus v Tunisia 2022

These matches all played out the same way. If we progress at this world cup, it will look that same as 2022. Based on the quality of competition where the players play, in both 2022 and 2026, we should not make it out of the group. I would say for each match we are around 30-40% to get a result. In 2022, Arnie hit that 40% twice and made it out.

We had possibly the weakest squad man for man that we have ever had in 2022. We were very lucky to even qualify. That they did so well is a credit to everyone involved, players and coaching staff.

These are always things up for debate. Without going back and looking I think 2014 WC squad was fairly comfortably the weakest. The current squad has a lot more potential that is yet to be realised. Overall I think it is stronger, but 2022 had a much better midfield with Mooy and 2022 Irvine being injury free.

The 2014 squad still had players like Cahill, Bresciano and Jedinak in it although I agree it competes for the weakest. This squad has a bit more potential than recent squads and hopefully none of these youngsters with potential have reached their peak yet.

Most importantly what pub are we drinking in Vancouver? We land 2:30pm match day, off to AirBnB for a shower, then off to the pub. Can someone get me a Jug of New and 2 schooner glasses....cheers
Welcome to the forum! I'm jealous I'm not there too!

How are they facts?

They haven't happened yet so they are only potential facts.

I, for one, detest Popa's tactics and deplore his selections. But we still have a very good defence and the attacking players to test anyone in our group.

So I give us about a 70% chance of getting out of the group - given third is a decent chance.
