FIFA 2026 WC - general

Japan just released their 26-man squad.

View attachment 6871
It speaks levels about Japan’s depth and excellence that Kōta Takai, a guy at Mönchengladbach on loan from Spurs, isn’t in the squad and people aren't even too surprised. Their system across the men’s and women’s at senior and youth levels is very admirable and has produced quality talent that Asian and other opponents alike should be watching out for.

Germany should make it to the round of 16 at least and are likely going to top their group this time around before possibly facing the Socceroos in the round of 32 depending on how the group standings pan out and which best eight third-placed teams make it through to the knockouts.

I don't know who works things like this out but....

That depth missing is wild.

Thats soo much worse.... the clubs players are "missing from" would make us weep in joy...
We have players in most of the leagues too. Our players won't improve until they get given these opportunities but Japan has the edge in development and many leagues are on the hype train. It's just so highly competitive and our own players can't get a look in and need to go more appropriate routes to develop as best as they can.

I wouldn't say bet on Japan to win the tournament. 3.75/1 to reach quarters but everyone has touch potential opponents before that. 7/1 to reach the semis.

Japan won't be going all the way because they'll be getting tough opposition in the round of 32 and possibly the round of 16, and even if they make it past the first two rounds of the knockout stage they may still end up losing on penalties again at some point in the latter stages of the World Cup despite the new format of the J-League hoping to improve their fortunes in penalty shootouts.

Brazil have named their final 26-player list for the World Cup with the country's all-time leading goalscorer Neymar included in the playing list for the first time since 2023, meaning he's set to make an appearance at his fourth consecutive World Cup after featuring in the last three cycles since 2014. Joao Pedro misses out despite being the top scorer for Chelsea in the Premier League this year with 15 goals and five assists, whilst Alisson is named in the squad even after having missed Liverpool's last ten matches due to injury.

Decided to do some little stats/numbers around qualifiers - since there's a lot of criticism about the 48 team World Cup format.

In this little look through, I'm looking specifically at the difference between the 32 and 48 team formats, and essentially the variation of nations qualified.

Firstly - looking back at how many of the 32 nations from the 1998-2022 World Cups qualified for 2026:
  • 2022 - 26/32 - 81%
  • 2018 - 24/32 - 75%
  • 2014 - 24/32 - 75%
  • 2010 - 21/32 - 66%
  • 2006 - 24/32 - 75%
  • 2002 - 22/32 - 68%
  • 1998 - 23/32 - 72%
Looking back specifically year on year - How many of the 1998 nations qualified for 2002, how many of 2002 for 2006, and so-on until 2022 for 2026 (which is the same figure as above for that one) gets the following
  • 2022 - 26/32 - 81%
  • 2018 - 24/32 - 75%
  • 2014 - 20/32 - 63%
  • 2010 - 24/32 - 75%
  • 2006 - 19/32 - 59%
  • 2002 - 20/32 - 63%
  • 1998 - 20/32 - 63%
What will be interesting is to see for 2030, how much the percentage will change. Anything less than 10 nations from 2026 failing to qualify for 2030 will be an increase in that sense.

Good luck to Scotland. The Haiti squad came out on transfermarkt and their attackers were valued at a few million. We have a few but I'd except many not even over a million. Transfermarkt valued are skewed and base off form on an algorithm. Somewhat reflective but our players are massively undervalued.

Portugal's due to be released later today as well - That's the only one I think that's expected.

  • Germany - 21/5
  • Norway - 21/5

Brazil’s reaction to Neymar being picked:

Honestly though? Nah, Neymar shouldn’t be picked. Crazy that João Pedro missed the squad too. I get that Chelsea aren’t that good anymore but he should still make the squad. Surely he’s an injury replacement.
