World news and politics.

No big wealthy magnate with decades of history in the city is leaving New York for Houston.
That's right. They're in their own bubble anyway just like Hollywood. It's the businesses that are moving to other states, mostly red. In turn, blue state voters move there and the transformation happens again.

Only natural NY has had period of malaise and it'll fall and rise again. Hopefully here it flattens out to the benefit of many.

The last time I saw the political left so excited about an election victory in the US was when Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential Election.

Joe was going to heal a broken America....

Sometimes we put a bit too much expectations on politicians. They are politicians, not miracle workers!!
How delusional was that though? Biden was a broken brain who just forgot where he was. It was irresponsible.

Had they put someone with more modern thinking and energy they probably would've won last time too. Harris certainly wasn't the answer.

It will be interesting to see if this election victory by Mamdani will move the Democrat Party further away from their current position on the political spectrum.

This weeks New York Magazine seems to think change is in the air..

Such a radical concept. A politician that wants to make life better for everyone.

At each end of the spectrum, yes. It's convenient that NY, NJ, California and others have the population and industries that produce so much value.

I'm referring to states such as Florida and Texas. Utah and South Carolina have become a lot better too. Places like Oklahoma are just lost.

This is state based and is no different to the EU. Germany and France pay way more to the rest of the bloc but living in Portugal or Poland isn't bad. It's about creating good places to live and attracting talent there. Many professionals and families have ditched NY and California but maybe not purely for political reasons.

Suck a radical concept. A politician that wants to make life better for everyone.

I agree, maybe the upper echelons of the Democrats will realise its not just about the college educated hipsters....

As Mamdani has pointed out....there's a lot of warehouse workers, bike delivery workers, kitchen workers and cleaners out there who need a poltical doctrine working for them.

He's a breath of fresh air. There;'s a great video of him speaking Spanish - I was like 'WTF - he speaks spanish too?'

Then the rest of the video was him just trying to learn lines purely for the video. This kind of honesty and engagement works. Let's hope he is a success and he can set up benchmark for other politicians to wrk for greater good rather than donors.

The US goverment now just purely is there for their donors. It's insanity the brazen and utter corruption with contract awarding

We'll see....

The 2008 crash, the coronavirus crisis and it's turbulent economic aftermath have revived interest in the theories of J.M. Keynes, the liberal English economist, especially within centre-left political parties...

But if you really look at Keynes’ life and ideas you'll see that he was no friend of the working class. The working classes need socialism, not Keynesianism....

Maybe this is their time!!

It's probably not something I'd normally be bothered to do but seeing as though its been quite the discussion point on here I'd thought I'd take a closer look at Mamdani's and Cuomo's election results....

It seems that as well as polling well in working class those numerous immigrant enclaces in places like Queens and The Bronx, often economically deprived districts, which you might expect Mamdani did exceptionally well in the gentrifying 'hipster' neighbourhoods such as Bushwick and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Also in the 'brownstone belt' of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill, so beloved of the white liberals and wealthy creatives....

Cuomo did well in Lower Manhattan, the East Village, Tribeca, the Upper Eastside where all the gazillionaires reside..... Also did well in working class Staten Island too.

Mamdani's performance in Williamsburg is interesting as well as being 'hipster central' it has quite a large quite conservative Orthodox Jewish population too.

Although Cuomo did well in Riverdale, another strongly populated Orthodox neighbourhood.

For decades, Democrats in New York City have prevailed with a fairly static coalition - white liberals in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Black and Latino voters, ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities and a smattering of other immigrants.

But reading a few opinions here and there from various political media, it does suggest that Mamdani has reworked the contours of that coalition, stitching together new alliances that could shift the city’s political outlook for years to come....

The thing with wars in Africa are complex.

Number 1 it’s not ‘news’ in traditional sense as it’s always kicking off there

2. It’s not like a war in Europe where you have a massive network of news sources and filmmakers able to get images out. Try sending a channnel 7 crew to Sudan ffs

3. It’s only natural for people to take not of conflict in an area where there is some connection
