World news and politics.

This is often the case with the big end of towners....

Sometimes it's more about the politio-cultural fall out than the politio-economics....

Anyone who has even an elementary understanding of politics and how politics works innpractice would know that Mamdani's intentions to implement policies that would relieve New York City's super rich of vast swathes of their filthy lucre is for the birds...

It's easy for a populist poliician, on the left or right, to make campaign promises but once they are facing the arduous task of office and actually having to run the joint, not so easy to implement them.

Well here's the thing. If you don't try you'll never know.

It's like in our elections. The only mob offering anything different is the Greens but 95% won't vote for them but then will bitch about, whoever is in power, how nothing changes.

Well no shit.

Was thinking about this. Spend more than it will cost them. 'cause it's all a game.

They don't want anyone to be better off...

It's crazy. If you had a billion dollars wouldn't you want to do something good with it?

Not sure if people realise how much 1 billion actually is.

1 000 minutes is a 0.7 weeks
1 000 000 minutes is a 1.9 years.
1 000 000 000 minutes 1901 years.

And Musk and Bezos have north of half a trillion each. The USAID budget was $26 billion and Musk cut the arse out of it. For what fucking reason? So, literally, hundreds of children could starve to death?

Literally this. You have people who will vote against universal health care, and suffer the consequences, because they see that as 'communism'.

Meanwhile they're dying because insulin cost 20 times what it costs in the rest of the world but at least they're owning the 'libtards'.

The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the axe. The axe was clever and convinced the trees that since his handle was made of wood, he was one of them.

Just utter cunts. Horrible cunts.

The thing is no one in any lifetime needs a billion dollars for themselves personally. Money to them isn’t about what it can buy, it’s about ego and power.

Edit: And “winning”.

It was interesting that leading Democrat identities like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, both New Yorkers publicly withheld their endorsements of Mamdani during the campaign....

The most influential political figures in New York state politics avoiding any public endorsement of Mamdani?

Kathy Hochul the New York Governor eventually, maybe reluctantly, endorsed him in an op-ed for the NYT but didn't say much else....

What may seem cooperative at first could soon turn to a lot of differences in how to move ahead. Reports already that implementing such policies needs to get through the vote and the governor isn't too keen on tax increases.

Expect compromise or half baked policies. Compromise I suppose.

Yep. I agree....

There's going to be quite a lot of people who voted for Mamdani who usually don't bother with voting, who will be disappointed.

It's a similar situation to Trump really. Just opposite ends of the populism spectrum....

There are a lot of those street videos with gotcha moments on how dumb voters are. I prefer the content where there are genuine, eloquent conversations. They do exist. Just everyday people sharing their concerns.

Because endorsing a self declared 'socialist' in America is akin to saying you molest children for fun.

That's how fucked up they are.

Maybe. What if he pulls it off?

Maybe. What if he pulls it off?

If he does then he's going to get re-elected for another term and other politicians in his socialist sphere of politics are going to be quite sought after.

What if he doesn't pull it off?

I mean why not turn NY into the Copenhagen of America? It'll need mass reform but a smooting out should happen.

A lot of industries have already moved to Florida and Texas but that means reform and positive business provisions are needed to fill the NY void. It's an opportunity.

A key point is many people have left because they can't afford to stay there. It's a cycle where we may see an interesting drop in NY cost. Places like Austin and Tampa have become way more expensive and that's not including when the Seinfeld's packed up and moved to Del Boca Vista.

I think he's got genuine intentions to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of New Yorkers who are currently struggling with high Iiving costs. I liked hosnspeech about people who work in warehouses, bike delivery companies and kitchens.

I also think that deep down he's in politics for the right reasons and not there just to improve his lot, like ao many if his fellow politicians.

But my points have been that I do have reservations on how he is going to achieve his goals. Especially when so many people, including some in his own Democrat Party will be trying to white-ant him....

Good luck to him. He's going to need it. Unfortunately I won't be going to live in NYC anytime soon. I'd perhaps liked to have lived there in my 20's and 30's but not now....

No big wealthy magnate with decades of history in the city is leaving New York for Houston.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Back to the status quo then.

The last time I saw the political left so excited about an election victory in the US was when Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential Election.

Joe was going to heal a broken America....

Sometimes we put a bit too much expectations on politicians. They are politicians, not miracle workers!!
