World news and politics.

I heard an interesting interview on BBC breakfast radio the other day with a Polish cabinet minister.

From his point of view, the best response to Russia/Putin would be the provision of full technical and financial support for Ukraine from all NATO countries, instead of the current half hearted efforts, coupled with real sanctions, to include sanctions on those countries supporting Putin.

Of course, this would have to include a complete cessation of Russian oil imports.....

Unlikely.
The other thing to is if the war goes worse for Russia and Putin goes, it’s not like some democratically elected progressive peaceful person is coming in. The next option would likely be even worse.

You cannot dismantle decades/centuries old thinking and systems.

Yep. Putin has built a political apparatus around himself which won’t easily go away so the regime will just keep on rolling regardless of whether Vlad is there or not. And there's no real political opposition or as you say no alternative thinking in Russia at that higher political level. So for any moderate candidate to take over it would require a full rupture of this ingrained 'Greater Putin' regime itself....

Meaning for any new President, the list of possibilities would be limited to Putin loyalists and other Kremlin insiders.

Former 'opposition' leader Alexei Navalny would have once been the most prominent politician who could seek to lead a post-Putin Russia, but he err 'died' in prison in February 2024....

Xenophobia is ingrained in the Russian condition.

Mongol invasion
Swedish invasion
Polish invasion
French invasion
Japanese invasion
German invasion

These have shaped the Russian mind over, like you say, centuries.

They see the enlargement of NATO as a defacto invasion so if you think that a years long war bothers Putin, it doesn't, they've seen it all before.

Good post.

In his excellent book
'The Romanovs' - 1613-1918, the historian Simon Sebag Montefiore says exactly the same thing about Russia's long obsession with invasions. Although it takes him 600+ pages....

There was a big article in Tuesday's Washington Post about how, with the use of drones, both Russia and Ukraine are now targeting each other’s oil and gas refineries and storage facilities and other critical energy infrastructure......

This use of drones, AI and other high tech military hardware becoming increasingly a major part of the modern battle process and there's a very good chance that it's going to make soldiers and other battlefield personnel obsolete....

Any of you kids out there who fancy signing up for the military?
Well you might want to re-access your career plans! 🤣

Go to r/combatfootage on reddit and you can watch literally hundreds of blokes being killed by drones rigged with explosives. It's heavily biased towards Ukrainians taking out Russians but you'd be deluded to think it wasn't happening on both sides.

They used to drop grenades on them but now they attach explosives and just crash them into the poor bastard on the receiving end. (And they fly them into the tightest spaces imaginable.)

Also because they can be jammed they send them out trailing optic fibre leaving an absolute mess everywhere.

Yep. It's warfare....but not as we know it.

Drone warfare is a rapidly evolving technology whereby artificial intelligence enhances the capabilities of these so called autonomous drones, it’s completely transforming conflict with AI-powered targeting, swarm operations, and precision strikes.....

And it certainly raises questions about the ethics of the use of these autonomous weapons in the modern battlefield.

It's also changing the dynamics of warfare. Where smaller countries, states or even insurgent or terrorist groups could now drag conflicts into long, attritional campaigns.

And it's relatively low cost and high impact technology too. What's not to like for anyone involved in a war?

So in the past 24 hours two former marines, maga boys, gone on shooting rampages.

My advice is that people should probably stay away from the US.

There's way too many nutters around. It's a shame because I've been a few times and I always thought it was brilliant but it's definitely gone a bit crook...

Yeah, it's the whole political situation that's keeping me from wanting to go there.
I'd love to go and experience it, but.. it's just worrisome. Especially since travel there for me would now mean going with the wife, and she's even more of that mindset to stay away from the US.

There's a volatility about the place. Which is a shame because it's a great place to visit.

Tension Strategy.

Where the government allows or encourages violence to create a feeling of insecurity so that they seek solace in the government. Fascism 101.

My son just transitted through the US for 4 hours between flights and had to fill in the forms for the transit. No word of a lie he had to list his social media accounts. WTF?!
