Israeli troops push into Lebanon to seize key border positions

The BBC sees troops and tanks massing near the border, as speculation mounts that Israel is planning a full-scale ground invasion to fight Hezbollah.

Taking on Hezbollah wont be as easy as rolling their little brother Hamas.

Although with Iran now facing an existential threat in terms of their supply lines to their various terrorist proxies around the region.

Here Reuters are reporting some of Irans other shi'te terrorist proxies are turning away from the regime in Tehran....

It will be interesting to see how many drones Iran have.

Soon the gulf states will not have the resources to intercept the and will only use air defence for ballistic missiles and take the hits. Damage control.

It takes at least 3 defensive missiles to stop one attack. They are churning through resources.

If it keeps up drones will hit gulf states without any defence.

I would argue that having a highly effective system of drone capability is the single biggest advantage of any warzone at the minute.

Drones introduce a different statistical pressure:

Slower, but cheaper.

Launched in waves.

Designed to exhaust air defences over hours rather than minutes.

If ballistic missiles are the shock factor, drones are the attrition factor. And perhaps those are the scariest capability of Iran. Production cost is minor in comparison to the cost for its destruction. For example: Shahed-136 drone: $20,000 – $50,000; More sophisticated attack drones: $50,000 – $200,000.

A single wave of 100 drones might cost an attacker around, $2–5 million. But if defenders intercept those drones using Patriot missiles, the defensive bill could reach $300–400 million. Even cheaper systems like Iron Dome still create a financial imbalance if large numbers of drones are launched simultaneously.

Underground “missile cities”

Iran’s survivability matters as much as its inventory.

Its missile infrastructure includes:

Hardened underground tunnels
Concealed storage depots
Protected launch sites
The statistical question here is not how many missiles Iran has, but how many survive first-wave strikes. If survivability is high, the conflict shifts from a short exchange to prolonged attrition. Iran does not need to formally blockade the Strait of Hormuz to make an impact.

Through:

Anti-ship missiles

Naval mines

Fast attack craft

Drone harassment

It can disrupt shipping enough to:

Raise insurance costs

Divert vessels

Spike energy prices

Already, tanker traffic hesitations and suspended crossings show that economic pressure can escalate faster than battlefield outcomes. In war calculus, this is force multiplication without direct engagement.

I totally agree with this. At the start of the Ukraine conflict it was our drones they were using manufactured in QLD. I think we'd be better off defensively if we focussed on deterrents like drone capabilities including submersible drones. Our standing army isn't large enough to go blow-for-blow in a conflict. We need to fight smarter with technology.
 
This is probably a terribly unpopular opinion but I think we also need a nuclear deterrent medium to long term. I think we've surreptitiously positioned ourselves for that. We have a research reactor for nuclear medicine, missile technology, the manufacturing capability, access to uranium, the scientists. We could acquire them if needed.

That's wild. It's what we need. I reckon it'd be a nightmare trying to take Australia if we had drones. We're so isolated and large. Supply chains would be stretched. It would already be difficult.

I fly drones for work and I have seen some dumb shit from amateur drone pilots. My personal favourite was someone who was hovering in position in the approach to the runway of a major airport. Well within the no fly zone. Very dangerous.

Saudi Arabia intercepts more drones
The Saudi Defence Ministry says its forces have intercepted seven drones east of the capital, Riyadh, in the past hour.

The announcement came an hour after it said it had downed eight other drones that had entered the kingdom’s airspace.

As we’ve been reporting, Iranian President Masoud Pezesjkian said earlier that neighbouring countries will no longer be targeted unless an attack originates from their territory. But Iran was hit with attacks shortly afterwards, triggering retaliatory assaults.
