World Cup 2026 Australia thread

Isnt this what the Aleague does though? A drinks break isnt the worst thing in the world for player safety... If they have Beyonce come out and dance will the players are getting a drink and the sing the US national anthem 4 times a match thats another story.

When temperatures hit a set mark. And only then. Not every match.

Sure, but maybve this is an equilization measure to make sure teams aren't disadvantaged accross the borad?

Don't know, Im clutching at straws but either way, there will be more things to comp;ain about next year than this is my take.

The pledge of allegiance and US national anthem before every match will rub alot of people up the wrong way for example,.

What a load of crap. Just more American influence. Judge the need for hydration breaks on the game conditions on the day, with set criteria (temperature, rh)
Completely agree with Keeper66. When I first saw this link posted by Veritas, I thought it was just some sort of piss-take from one of those Betoota-like satirical news reports. I cannot believe they're implementing this and being allowed to implement this, under the guise of looking after players! What a load of garbage. This is a purely commercial decision and as Muz said, further debases the game. Wait til the 3 minute break gets extended out to 5 minutes next time around and then 6-7 minutes the time after that. This is such a significant change to essentially break the game into quarters. As other posters have said, if it is truly a patient safety decision, then it occurs when the temperature / humidity is above a specific threshold, not as a blanket rule. I honestly thought it was impossible for anyone to be worse than Blatter, but Infantino has him covered I reckon.

It's the thin end of the wedge. It'll be standard for games to be four quarters before you know it.

I would also say that by the time we factor for this new break period, plus inevitable delays caused by VAR, and plus the new method for calculating added time, we're probably going to find that halves of football are around 60 minutes rather than 45 minutes. Or rather, 4 x 30-minute quarters. Maybe Infantino has been watching the AFL!

What??? I hope you are taking the piss. They aren't planning to play the US national anthem before each match are they?

I completely agree re Blatter and Infantino. Blatter was essentially a financial criminal, but at least (looking in hindsight) he didn't bastardise the actual game too much. Infantino is an even bigger crook, AND is moving towards completely fucking the game at an ever increasing rate.

Oh Im with you 100% I dont agree with it whatsoever... 5 subs was meant to be a temporary reaction to Covid decimating squads remember?

If the US broadcasters has its way then yes games will be 4 quarters with a countdown clock and kick-ins for throwins before too long...

If the US world cup is a success we are in or a world of hurt (at least as who love the game as it is) the tik tok market wants its entertainment in bite size chuncks...

The only games where the temperature may be down is in a dome or late evening. Even the latter could still be quite hot. After the CWC they clearly learned to schedule a drinks break. We have that regularly in ME games. I don't think broadcasters will go to an ad break. The Americans will but that's their thing.

What about places like Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco (venues for the Socceroos)? I haven't been to any of them, but Google tells me the average Max June temp for each of them is about 20 degrees. If that is correct, that's not drink break weather.

No way in the world they're not breaking for ads. They've already got those border ads during matches here in Australia.

Whoever is covering it will 100% go to an ad.

Exactly.

We all know what it is. It's a money grab from a bunch of cunts for whom too much money is never enough.

So they should have scheduled those cooler climate games much earlier in the day to maximize European TV times. Instead they've put it back due to heat and now the games are on at a much worse time.

I don't recall ad breaks during a drink break in the past for ME games or late summer leagues. Here of course it'll be different for the American broadcaster but other countries may or may not skip away for a second.

I think they should have taken the risk and schedule games at lunch time and play it by ear. It may or may not be really hot.

It's a naked money grab. It's got zero to do with 'player welfare'.

It's not only about money. The conditions have presented themselves with that opportunity due to the insane heat last summer. Remember when the bench players were sent to the sheds? They don't want a repeat of that.
