The Western United Thread

Im not sure why you are concerned mate? Youve got something to watch every season, your club will ALWAYS be in the Aleague, so just watch that.... why do you even know about "the drama" if it doesn't effect you?
Brah what do you call this western united noise that's drama?

And there is Aussie football in a nutshell.

Do we stand waiting at the door, knock the door down and charge in, or build another bloody house.
Some years ago, when the A League figures were in free fall and it was clear that Lowy's model was not working, I advocated (as a door banging in wind to anyone that matters) that with expansion there was an opportunity to rebrand and relaunch, to distance the competition from its sorry history of gross mismanagement.

With hindsight, that would have actually been a prudent option. In a past life I had a lot to do with the creative aspect of major brand launches. My assessment then, as it still is, was that the A League brand is too damaged to repair. It needs to be scrapped, the whole thing reconceived, and start again with a new brand and a new launch.

Twenty years on it won't look like defeat - it can be sold as modernisation.

What do I think that looks like? A larger, 20 team more inclusive competition, with more flexibility on grounds, with the possibility of semi pro teams. The end of absurd licence fees. Let the new clubs spend that money on upgrading their grounds.

Stay with summer but play games ONLY at night under lights. Have the competition produce and stream its own content by subscription.

Actually have a damned marketing budget and plan, finally.

Will it or anything like it happen? Only if the A League collapses. The way I feel right now, I think that is our best option.

I have dealt with management structures most of my working life and I have never seen anything like the incompetence and lack of accountability of, in sequence, FFA, FA, and APL.

One BIG problem, none of the clubs in this country own their own grounds to upgrade.

A quick read of here and the expansion thread and undoubtedly the only takeaway is that the solution is a full divorce together with a no contact order to make sure they never cross paths again.. each side cut their loses and restart from ground up on their own! FA vs APL.

Would I support a South Melbourne team in a stand alone, closed off Aleague? - Sure, as long as the club IS South Melbourne and I am still a participating member in its governance, it is not some owned and paid for corporate shill that deviates from the members based sporting, not for profit football club that represent me, my family and my friends... sure I would.
Great post Mono. On this point, aren't some of the foundation 8 going against this? Like Sydney Olympic have set up a new entity, just the owner running the whole thing, no member voice? Everything clear as mud right now haha.

News joining the conversation.... they seem to be saying they can't make next season as neither SM or P would have the time to put a side together...

Some bits copied from the above link...

""""" A tight timeframe will work against the hopes of former National Soccer League clubs South Melbourne and Preston potentially replacing embattled Western United in the upcoming A-League season."""""

""""""
South Melbourne president Nick Maikousis said: “We’d bring success, we’d bring excellence in football and a real passion for it.”

Preston president David Cvetkovski said his club “would have no problem competing in all facets” of the A-League and “could build a side within months”.""""""

John Anastasiadis comes to South he would put together a finals contender in 2 months easily. Sadly thats the only scenario i see him ever coaching in the A league (South getting in as emergency fill in)
