And there is Aussie football in a nutshell.
Do we stand waiting at the door, knock the door down and charge in, or build another bloody house.
Some years ago, when the A League figures were in free fall and it was clear that Lowy's model was not working, I advocated (as a door banging in wind to anyone that matters) that with expansion there was an opportunity to rebrand and relaunch, to distance the competition from its sorry history of gross mismanagement.
With hindsight, that would have actually been a prudent option. In a past life I had a lot to do with the creative aspect of major brand launches. My assessment then, as it still is, was that the A League brand is too damaged to repair. It needs to be scrapped, the whole thing reconceived, and start again with a new brand and a new launch.
Twenty years on it won't look like defeat - it can be sold as modernisation.
What do I think that looks like? A larger, 20 team more inclusive competition, with more flexibility on grounds, with the possibility of semi pro teams. The end of absurd licence fees. Let the new clubs spend that money on upgrading their grounds.
Stay with summer but play games ONLY at night under lights. Have the competition produce and stream its own content by subscription.
Actually have a damned marketing budget and plan, finally.
Will it or anything like it happen? Only if the A League collapses. The way I feel right now, I think that is our best option.
I have dealt with management structures most of my working life and I have never seen anything like the incompetence and lack of accountability of, in sequence, FFA, FA, and APL.
