The Melbourne Victory Thread

Def don’t agree w/the concept of the losing side having a POTM
I think its just from our team. I wouldn't have given him our best. Genreau was better.

Currently Diles is better, but it's a downward trajectory. Brebner win% 19.23 / Diles win% 37.04
I reckon the problem was that we made it to the GF last season, and although we were unsuccessful, it was only a 1-0 loss. It would have been harsh not to give Diles the opportunity to build from there. I reckon if the WU issues had happened earlier, then we would have definitely signed Aloisi.

When we won the “Heist in the Hunter” in 2018… While it was a memorable moment in the club’s history for various reasons, I always thought it was going to hurt us in the long term.

Why? Because the club believed it could get away with taking short cuts, finish 4th and still win the toilet seat.

3 years later, we end up finishing last.

Last year we made a GF from 5th and the previous year we were 5 minutes away from the toilet seat after finishing 3rd.

I have to admit it was pretty exciting watching us go on a run in the finals over the past 2 seasons. But Melbourne Victory should not be satisfied with finishing 4th or 5th every season. We haven’t won the league in 10 (soon to be 11) years and we have only been in contention of winning the league once in that time.

Ever since we had Popa, we have had issues scoring goals. When we lost the GF to CCM, we had defenders scoring our goals in that finals series. We all saw the holes and have been crying out for a quality striker for a long time. Whoever decided that we didn’t need to sign a striker going into this season needs to have his position reviewed (John Didulica, I'm looking at you, mate).

I know there are other determining factors such as finances and ownership issues. But I also see how Hearts are going in Scotland and wonder why we haven’t recruited better when we use the same analytics services?

Melbourne Victory 1-0 down against Brisbane Roar in the second half of their game, not sure why Jing Reec is starting up front though with Nish more or less at full fitness.

Not sure how much blame can be put on Diles for lack of goals... He inherited Vergos and Reec (who admittedly has great athletic and physical attributes on face value) wasn't exactly inspiring at NPL level last season.

Visa spots need a rethink at the club, the Santos re-signing was very much a meh moment for me, way more upside in promoting the like of NPL standout Patrick Wall from the youth I would think.

I think our signings are an issue. Someone isn't making the most of the analytics we have access to.

I don't think Diles is much chop though.

Also wtf was Genreau thinking? Really disappointed in him.

I don't think Vergos is necessarily a bad player, I think it's more that he is the wrong style of player for the club. If he went to another club and performed well, I wouldn't be at all surprised. Wrong fit.
Reec is the direct result of not having a proper second division in this country. Has protentional, but lacks development. Something we see far too often unfortunately. Players like him should be starting at a 2nd div club for a couple of seasons before transferring to an AL club. Instead they are bench players at a-league clubs and don't gain any meaningful minutes/experience.
When it comes to Diles, he is clearly out of his depth. Looking at Fridays game, by HT it should have been very clear how the Roar had prepared for the game and what the strategy was. Diles had no answers. He needed to make some dramatic changes to counter their style, but he didn't or couldn't.
That being said, a competent striker would have been able to get the equaliser and change the dynamic of the game.

In every sport you are going to get players that are too good for second division but not good enough for the first. Sawyers at Mac is a classic example, as a teenager he did not make teh cut for the A-League and then went played NPL, eventually Mac drafted him and he is usually an impact player rather than a regular starter.

Well, he can't score the goals for them.
5% shots on target is abysmal and all on the players.
some pretty good chances there too

mind you, arnie once said in an interview that finishing is a lot about mental prep which could be diles fault

Yeah I thought about that too, good point. They do look bereft of confidence.

To me, it looked like two teams trying not to lose. A nil-all result is what would be expected. Reec was more noticeable although I am not sure whether he was more effective than in previous weeks and Vergos was on the pitch because the commentators said so. Mata was good in the first half but completely faded. I did notice that both teams had quite a few older players as well.

Velupillay the best option as a makeshift 9 now surely.
I reckon we should still play Velupillay wide. We need a new 9 in the transfer windown. Reec was trying but isn't up to it. Vergos might be okay as a sub but I don't like him leading the line
