The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

I think Badalato needs a sustained run playing senior football, before senior Roo selection, JS.

His form last in this last week has been very good. So have a few young teammates.
I don't disagree with the logic. But I think selection is more open now we've qualified. Poppa will want to see more players to have options come World Cup.

I'd look at it like the Arzani and Tilio selections. They're club form doesn't warrant selection but they have offensive qualities that other players don't, and they've been selected.

We'll want players as depth who can score. Segecic's and McGrees injuries highlight a lack of depth imo.

I'd like to see Badolato selected to see how he fits. We can wait to see how his senior form pans out between now and the World Cup. It's hedging bets.

Put it this way as it currently stands Badolato has a shit ton more credits in the bank for selection than Okon-Engstler ever did when he was brought into camp

An article talking about the domestic season structure this week references Poppa mentioning "likely at home" friendlies in March.

With the Finals draw in December Australia may prefer 2 games against a single opponent or 1 game each against two opponents who might double up with another Asian based friendly.

I reckon lock in a decent ranked Euro opponent for 2 games in Oz and then potentially look at an African opponent wherever works best logistically in the friendly immediately prior to the World Cup particularly if we draw an African team in our group.

Won't be much room left for experimenting in March. That squad will be near as dammit... or should be.

Plus Badolato in the Chile U20 WC last month was disappointing - nowhere near the player who won MVP at the AFC U20 Asian Cup earlier in the year. That's the common issue with young players - lack of consistency. But yeah give him a go, at his best he's a gamewinner and he has a good mentality as well as a good shot.

Agree. This window is the last opportunity for experimenting. The squad should be narrowed down to around 30 or so candidates by March.

Not sure teams will want to travel to Australia in March as it's heavy club time and really close to the world cup.
Agree. It will be hard to get European opposition out here. Probably easier to get African opponents who may want a payday. Easier again to get Asian opposition from teams that just missed out on qualifying.

Young guys usually aren't consistent because they lack experience. They can have a lot of talent, but they can also make a lot of mistakes that more experienced players will capitalise on. Sometimes its best to let them get that experience in the weekly grind of club football before throwing them to the wolves in an international. I'm comfortable with players like that being in a friendly squad at the moment though, and maybe even give them some minutes if they measure up in training.

That is definitely a realistic outcome, hopefully we know who/when before Christmas rather than last minute.

OK, so who is still on the list that we would like to see next in the next camp? For me it is Sapsford, Stama and Elder.

Availability concerns based on injury, eligibility and resumption of the A-League aside.

Epic 50 minutes of press conference

I have to fill out forms at work for a few hours today so this will help keep me sane

The Socceroo's will be lucky to get out of the group if at all possible. Can we really afford to keep bring in players and no trying to get our best 11 out there to prep them for the world cup?.
