The Australian Championship šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗšŸ†

Yea it’s a factor, potentially in the foundational years even more so. also family connection would play a big part, who your grandfather, father supported etc. Marconi has been more successful and played in the national level for much longer so that probably accounts for the larger support base. As I’ve said before there was a long time when it was one of the premier soccer clubs in this country More people probably have a personal/familial connection to Marconi. It’s a pretty friendly rivalry Ala Sydney united v Melbourne knights, rather than a deep seeded hatred.
In saying all that im an exception to that rule, whilst he wants/always wanted Marconi to do well my dad would actually probably consider himself more of an APIA supporter. Probably a lot to do with the fact APIA were stronger when he first came to Australia, and then Marconi became the more successful later. Because of that I think APIA probably also have a maybe a higher average age of support, but they’ve done well to get a lot of young locals in lately… Also re dad, he’s from Rome and supports Roma, so he can’t get past the mental association of the Maroon of APIA being similar to Roma and the blue of Marconi being similar to Lazio even though as I’ve told him many times that’s completely coincidental and they have nothing to do with each other

I think it’s true that the period above was the peak of suburban living etc and car culture and that it’s cycling back. But I don’t think its the main factor in this particular case. I think across a season all things being equal the averages would probably end up being similar, in the regular NPL Marconi probably gets the bigger crowds tbh. Where APIA play is probably closer to where the largest cluster of Italians in Sydney live, but also it seems as though APIA have targeted the inner west trendy ā€œsupport your localā€ demographic relatively successfully aswell. Imo the vibe at APIA is less palpably Italian than it is at Marconi despite still defiantly notable, potentially partially the case because of the Marconi club itself.

Also potentially a tangent but the Sydney metro area is probably more uniformly urban/dense across the whole city than other Australian cities due to the way it developed and it’s geographic constraints, even 10, 20, 30k from the cbd apartments and high rise are still ubiquitous as opposed to Melb where density drops off dramatically 5-10k from the cbd
Yep .... I really noticed this when I took a train to Loftus. Never ending apartments. Which is neither good nor bad (probably good!)

If you cross sydney from one side to the other, east to west from Bondi-Sydney CBD-Parramatta-Penrith along rail/motorway corridor its appartments and even clusters of high rise the whole 65k across. Unlike other aus cities in that regard. Ofcourse there are lower density pockets too away from transport links

Is the main difference between the fanbases based on geography? So if you're from the West you support Marconi and if you're from the Inner West you support APIA?
Geography comes into it for sure even though we don’t have a bitter rivalry club wise.
We respect each other but they are Westies to me haha whereas as G mentions comes down to fam fathers Nonnos who their mates were and followed.
We’re also a mix of north and southern Italian where back there that’s a massive divide bitter in many cases whereas here we bundled more together being minority to the anglos back in the day.
My fam relos lived in Strathfield Blakehurst and my Mum got the old man to buy on the Northside - the trees and gardens.
Hence APIA was it first and foremost but he also having Cro blood as well always kept eyes on Sydney Cro and went to some of those games meeting other fam friends.
I luv the passion and emotion I didn’t care which game when I was young.
Marconi have had the luxury of the Palace and I’m happy for them being fellow eyeties:) we screwed up our club on the bay real sad but I luv APIA beating them haha

I usually prefer to sort by "median". It puts less importance on outliers, so a "bad weather" match or an advantageous local derby won't skew the result as much, for good or bad. It's more in line with the crowd you could expect week to week (although three matches isn't a lot to go by). Below are the attendances for each match. Seven foundation clubs at the top in green, local derbies in peach.

I was shocked how many there were whilst walking around Mosman!

Who has the bigger fanbase between Marconi and APIA in 2025?

in 2025 during the season it was 50-50, i'd say a touch more marconi.

However in the Championship, APIA have gone another level and engaged the local community and made it compulsory for all their juniors to attend. Whether those crowd numbers are fluctuated or not is another argument.

The marketing has ben unimaginative, dull and frankly cringeworthy at times.

if half this shit was done in the a-league you wouldn't hear the end of it.

I know there is not lots of money but surely we couldve seen some better ideas or cooler shit to promote such a milestone

It appears the casual observer has been absent and interest from largely only those who follow the clubs.

so now we have got our own Bunker and Captains call review ?!
Infantino must have been watching NRL games lol.........and thought straight away about Garriock hehe
In the NRL, a "captain's call" refers to
the captain's challenge, a system where the captain can request a review of a referee's decision. This challenge is typically limited to once per game, and if the challenge is unsuccessful, the team loses its remaining challenges. The system, introduced in 2020, aims to correct key mistakes and give players the chance to overrule a ruling they believe is incorrect
