The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

Lets not bundle it all 'nationalist'... some of these ppl wouldnt know actual nationalism as a concept if it bit them on the arse more than once!
I kinda think its something like this

Cultural: Language, history (both of an ethnicity and their contributions to Australia), food, music dancing etc
Nationalism: Flags + anthems

We are proud of our Greek roots and we’ve always chanted Hellas - that will never change. But South would not go down the path that Sydney Olympic has taken. On match days, it’s about the football.

DJ playing English dance tunes, plenty of food options (including souvlaki), coffees, ice cream, etc.

That opening match against Sydney Olympic was just a really fun night with great vibes.
The thing is, as I say, Olympic hadn’t really been doing this stuff until recently, it’s obviously in some sort of attempt to get the Greek community back on side but they don’t know how to do it so they’re just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. Probably there’s an element of listening to some of the vocal minority etc as well. As you saw even a couple of years ago the community were coming out in much better numbers to support them at the pre season match v south and the cup game v Sydney fc.

Obviously this isn’t really working either. But it can be done for sure. I still maintain that a bit of sustained success on field always helps. They’ve continually let their fans down over the past few years and we all know Sydney sports crowds are notoriously fickle

Watching old on the ball episodes, there was a centrist position between the view that clubs formed by migrant communities should remove all references to their ethnic heritage and the view they should be left alone - the view that celebration of ethnicity was good but nationalism was bad

I wonder if anyone in the fa has that view today
The wouldn't be allowed to express it openly after the removal of the NCIP.

I'm always reminded of the following quotes below, when Melbourne Knights didn't want any "ethnic" clubs in the new league, and Lowy wanted a second division but the PFA blocked it! 😕 To be a fly on the wall back then... I wasn't around the league at the time, but people these days seem to think in very black or white minds about the past, whereas the actual articles I read from the time suggest it was otherwise.
TBF to Melbourne Croatia, it was a sentiment shared by most of the old clubs at the time who recognised that soccer had to appeal to a broader church to grow... What they DIDN'T obviously mean was that the existing clubs should be so mercilessly dis-guarded to make way for new clubs... we WANTED the new clubs to join us, NOT replace us.

The Greek national anthem is reserved for national events, its not a party tune! At tghe football unless the Greek national team is playing it shows a lack of resepct! Plain and simple.

Heritage and pride can be subtle and more effective!

exactly right...

Yes..but it was called ethnic and weird by mainstream Australia
get it right - called WOG food way back then.
Nah the 80's italian restaurants were emerging more and more and gaining popularity (Syd/Melb) - the anglos finally saw the light eating decent tasting food instead (nice fresh produce) of their dire weekly roasts/chops peas and potato's and how many fish (fired batter) and chip shops there used to be.
Pizza places opened long before.
My ol man/Poppa would tell storeys that we used to giggle at, us wogs being into fishing, they used to go to the bait shops, and see occy.
The ol man would buy quite a bit - the aussie bloke would ask man your fishing alot - the ol man would say nah this is for dinna hahaha
This was the 70's when I was a little tacker.

olive oil is only good for curing ear infections didn’t you know
HAhaha it actually IS very good at that too... We love it so much we smother our kids with it when we baptise them. hahahahaah

Ill never forget the first time we took dad to a proper "white table cloth" restaurant and they brought him out some bread and tiny little saucer of olive oil with a drop of balsamic vinegar in it... hahahahahaha
