The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

100% This comp is 3 rounds old...... and even 6 rounds is a crappy sample size to gauge of but.... its all we are gonna get for some of the bottom finishing clubs .. at least this year.
This is why I think if we set up a proper 2nd division we need a mixture old clubs and new clubs.

Say, Souths, Preston, Knights from Vic, Wolves, Marconi and SU58 from NSW (all these clubs have relatively large supporter bases) and then new teams from Tassie, Canberra, and maybe Gold Coast, Brissy, Adelaide and Perth.

NPL teams in these non victorians just don't have proper fan bases and will struggle to attract new fans with everyone having ties to other NPL teams etc.

Sadly only South Melbourne appear to have enough fans, stadium, and money(?)/ambition to be there.

So because south are getting a couple thousand more on average that means no one else cares.. Just because south are the biggest fan base doesn’t mean that they’re the only club with fans or with people who care. Vic is not fundamentally different to nsw in this regard. (Preston are still a bit of a unique case in that they were getting similar levels of support as other npl clubs for decades up until very recently, south have always been the best of the traditional clubs when it comes to consistency of support across the long haul) the other smaller states maybe it’s a different case but some very silly broad brush statements here imo

Are the rest of the Scottish league system irrelevant and no one cares about them because they don’t have the numbers Celtic do, or in the Croatian system because they don’t have the numbers Dinamo Zagreb do. These are organic clubs which have been built from the ground up, they wouldn’t be where they were if no one cared

All due respect to the people suggesting as much if you’ve not spent any great deal of time around and engaging with these clubs then you dont understand the state of play on the ground. The mindset of WA football or qld football or whatever can’t be transposed onto nsw or vic

Yea can imagine compelling arguments being put forth on both sides. I dare say it would be part of an effort to further reconnect/engage with the Greek community
Im all for them pulling all the stops... they want to turn this into a 'glendi' (festival) hats off... i for one am eagerly looking forward to seeing my brethren on the wrong side of the border!

There is merrit to what you are saying and not far off what we argued for initially... it has to start with the strongest clubs, crowds isnt the only metric for sustainability! AL prove that.

Imo one of the main reasons for the cultural misunderstanding/misinterpretation from people from places like Brisbane or Perth or even Adelaide (no disrespect to them) is that as smaller/medium sized cities, football culture operates/has for some time operated more on the 1-2 club model Ala Manchester or Liverpool.

Sydney and Melbourne being bigger cities the football culture has operated on the multi club model you see in London. Just because afc Wimbledon or Barnet dont get the crowds that arsenal get doesn’t mean theyre not an important part of the football culture of London and doesn’t mean no one cares about them/they have no fans. Not every club should be held to some random arbitrary standardised expectations as to what they should be other than to be sustainable.

You see this play out other football codes too, just because st kilda don’t get the support Collingwood in the afl for instance do doesn’t mean they should just go be a local park team, same thing with nrl teams in Sydney. Where as in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide in those sports it also the 1-2 teams.

Exactly that, which is why crowds alone can never be the only metric! We seem to have too many ppl focused on that as a benchmark of success whther genuinely placing onus on it or for other more underhanded reasons!
For the genuine ones i say crowds can be grown exponentially if a club is healthy bc it will lead to success.
We want healthy clubs to grow this into a h&a not necessarily clubs that only have a few thousand support but who can fold in a few years! That is were wisdom dictates the clubs that have remained functional and competitive are also the ones with longevity, hence their foundation status to begin with..

Starting from scratch can work perhaps in tasmania if sth hobart cant work as it did for some fluke reason in adelaide, may even work again in WA but they are the exceptions bc for that 1 success we have seen it fail previously in qld, canberra, nsw, vic time and time again.

I have always said you compliment the foundation clubs with the next best applicants, like sunshine coast perhaps along with those that can show they have earnt a place and can sustain themselves, without that necessarily meaning we also maintain the prerequisite to be geographically spread out to cover the whole country.

clubs can have their 'ethnic' names back, old NSL giants are playing against each other televised on SBS, and now this!

What can happen next?
Haha
Well as much as this is a long time waiting new start let’s just be happy this keeps momentum going in a better smarter way with the times…..
Maybe ahead what could happen way ahead next is PG Jets and AU come back to the fold lol

Yer is a top club house got to say !
