The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

Maybe the problem is Olympic? Maybe they will pull out of it? And then what?
I’m not sure it’ll work as well as he wants it to, but Hanlin has said a few times that he wants Olympic to focus on the championship and now views the npl the same way the a league clubs do, as a place to prioritise youth development…will be interesting to see how he attempts to go about that. I dare say that might hypothetically be the long term future for all the championship clubs anyway if it were to go to a home and away league and clubs were to retain their spots in their local npls for their under 23/youth teams or whatever. A lot of water to go under the bridge yet in that regard, no one really knows what’ll happen. As of right now clearly the support base aren’t onboard with that plan and I think it’s far too early to start doing it when the npl is still your bread and butter and the championship isn’t even confirmed as a home and away format yet so maybe he’s just talking out of his ass.

So if Sydney Olympic gets relegated they still play in the "Championship" ?

They do indeed. Just as if the wanderers or Sydney fc get relegated from npl they still play in the a league. Not to my liking but it’s how things are as they stand. The structures of state league soccer and the national “leagues” are parallel, not interconnected

To be fair the likes of Preston (at the time), Fraser park, Brunswick Juventus etc all initially applied for the championship from npl 2-3 etc

So is this an exhibition tournament or a serious precursor to promotion/relegation ? I didn't wait through 10 years of bullshit for a exhibition tournament that I could organise in my head as a gala weekend over 4 weeks at Valentine Sports Park.

Teams from lower league already have a tournament they can compete in called the Australia Cup. If this is to be the "Championship" then it should be top 2 teams from every top tier state league in Australia.

Top two as in grand final and regular season winners? In the case of a double who would get the spot: the grand final runners-up or the regular season runners-up?

Where Are They Now? - EOI Edition

I'm revisiting the 32 EOI bids and their current league ladder.

Which of these have the capital to move up to a home and away Championship?

I think we can put a line through any teams from NNSW, WA, and probably ACT, unless some of the old AAFC clubs finally bid. Canberra Croatia actually won through to the tournament last year, but their median crowd was 4th lowest of all. But if they have a crapload of money then anything is possible.

South Hobart in Tasmania seem a no-brainer. They really need a team at national level and this club is in good position.

SA is interesting. I can say that I didn't see Playford storming up the league to top spot! They were 4th tier back in 2018. City, you'd think they automatically have a green light as long as the finances are finally sorted. And the Football SA bid, three strong clubs coming together, that's a tempting thought. I can see one bid locked in from SA, and another wouldn't surprise me. Another three clubs from the AAFC days that haven't bid yet (Comets, Jets, Hellas).

Queensland could explode if allowed to enter. I think the bulk of the new teams will come from here. And there are still a bunch that didn't bid that could put their hand up as well. Will the QLD federation still block them?

Victoria, surely they are more than capable of adding a few more teams. Knights and Juventus looking likely to jump up next season.

NSW I'm only adding more from here as a last resort.

But it's surely a piece of piss getting to 16 teams, there are just too many quality clubs around. They aren't all loaded like the foundation eight, but very capable of moving up. Next step is getting to 12-14 teams and seeing what a full season is worth commercially.

I think Heidelberg United and South Hobart will be the most likely sides to move up to a home and away Australian Championship but we could see more teams from the larger Member Federations secure promotion in the near future also.

It is somewhat ironic that Tasmania appear to be in a better position than SA to enter the NSD.

Adelaide United have captured all the fans in SA. And as great as that seems, you can now see why this is unhealthy.

I think their output is incredible, nationally and internationally. Before United, the NSL clubs there couldn't survive on the national stage in the end. THAT was unhealthy.

Even though those clubs don't have the support of yesteryear, they are probably in a better position now with the quality of their clubs, facilities, council support, juniors etc.

Having South Hobart in a proposed home and away NSD competition would be a massive boost for Tasmanian football, and provide an opportunity to improve the quality of football within that state, both from a footballing and administrative perspective. The problem is that Football Tasmania wont support them, as they want an A League team. It just beggars belief that you have this happening.

As much as I think Adelaide city are a great club, it is a detail worth remembering and a distinction worth making that they ended up dropping out of the nsl on their own accord. In the end at the time of the leagues disbandment the only traditional clubs remaining were from Sydney and Melbourne. It was Marconi, Sydney United, Sydney Olympic, South Melbourne and Melbourne Knights. It’s not a slight on Adelaide city who played almost every season of the nsl but it does show that transition of getting behind a new non ethnically aligned entity took place a bit more organically in Adelaide than it did in Sydney and Melbourne. The traditional clubs in those cities had to be actively removed against their will, were as in Adelaide and in Brisbane before that they stepped aside by themselves. That distinction is not trivial. And again, imo it’s mainly a function of scale. The population size of those cities and therefore ability for multiple clubs to coexist and carve out sustainable niches, the critical mass/size of communities in question, the amount of resources available etc

the lack of communication from the FA regarding this Championship is astonishing.

i wouldn't expect any announcements till after the A-league season wraps up, and possibly after the world cup.

They're probably all in the process of selecting stylish baggage for when they go to the World Cup and have forgotten the Championship exists. I don't expect anything for a while.

The FA doesn’t run the A-League to be fair (the APL does). But yeah you’re probably right about the World Cup. It’s the biggest stage in the world so obviously it takes up a lot of space, especially when it’s so close and players are already going over there for training camps.

i know that, which is more of a reason they will wait till after the A-League Season & World Cup IMO.

that way it can gain more interest?!
