Yeah because he's a Muppet. Doesn't give Devlin or Robertson a chance last window, but debuts KAI TREWIN!!!
Haven't read the article but the opening isn't necessarily true. Others come right in and play and some need multiple windows. Circumstantial in some cases but there isn't any kind of seniority with his picks based on merit.

better press conference than the one immediately after the game
In hindsight it was right to let the dust settle. Time difference also meant the posts needed to be timed for Australian mornings and it coincided with the 20th anniversary.

Popovic's reaction here comes across as sensible but I just hope it's not also an easy excuse.

Still fucking hopeless audio quality all round. Having to use a room mic to pick up both Popa and the speaker through the laptop....I mean come on. Play it through a soundcard with your laptop and record the audio from the video feed with a lapel mic.

Painful, and yet another example of where Australian football is currently at.

And what is with the room he is in?! Looks like he's being held captive in an unknown hotel room.

I think Popa is setting our current players up to fail. Plain and simple.

How he plays is unAustralian in my eyes.

These players should be able to represent who they are and where they come from! Express themselves on the pitch and with the ball and this stunts that. This pissant stuff will keep the game in this country in stagnation while he is at the helm.

If we concede early in a crucial WC group game what happens then?!

I'm sorry Tony I'm sure you are a very nice person...but your football is rubbish.

Doubt he’s a nice person, not that it’d reflect better on him in this instance.

We need to turn to a big(enough)-name foreign coach, IMHO. If not straightaway then at least def for the 2030 WC cycle💡🙏🏼

we've never had a big name foreign coach for a full cycle mind you. I suspect if we were in asia and qualifying regularly back when we were producing players like kewell, cahill and viduka we might've had a chance?

For me I honestly don't really care about their nationality, at this point I just want the best men's Australian football team to strive to play their best football.

Playing like tense confused robots in my opinion isn't going to achieve that.

I prefer a local coach generally speaking but someone who can employ the best of our players is needed. Tough assessment like Pim should be embraced but certainly a sense of arrogance or disinterest, Holger had the latter in learning about the local game, would be detrimental. Find a coach who actually cares and not someone just looking for a gig.

The fear is also they may prefer players we don't and then not get results then it gets very frustrating to scary.

I read somewhere that we are one of the highest paying countries for a NT coach.

If true, and with our recent history of qualification, you'd think it would be an attractive job for anyone. Not least as Oz is a pretty sweet place to live or be resident for a while.

Even Pep or Klopp couldn’t make the socceroos playing like Japan pr Venezuara or Uzbekistan.

Most of purr players need to learn basic first touch. Pass and move etc. Ange has been trying to play attacking football with high line but turnovers killing us and conceded many silly goals.

it is interesting that the only long term foreign coaches are pim and osiek when we had a billionaire in charge. Might be hard to tempt a big name?

That is very likely not true. The wage is what prevented pursuing Bielsa, or any other big name. Bielsa signed for Leeds as their highest ever paid coach. 6m pound per year which increased to 8m when he got them promoted.

From Google ai
Arnold was on about 1.9m, no reporting what Popa is on.
Bielsa is on 4 m with Uruguay.

The reasons we had the b tier (maybe) foreign coaches, followed by Australian coaches is they are cheaper. You also get better value for Australians because no one takes us seriously so the value on the market is less.

It's not that interesting. Billionaires are often notoriously cheap. I don't believe Lowy ever directly tipped money in. They never paid anywhere near high market rates.

yeah if we produced top level players we could probably attract a top level coach, but I'm skeptical that's possible before then

The innate first touch isn't bad except for Irvine and Miller. Basically our last two national team coaches have coached any self initiative out with rigid systems based in possession and backpassing. There are moments where our players go against the script and it looks alright. They do it at club level every week.

I’m aware; at this rate I’d be happy w/one for the short-term, as was the case in the past.
That we supposedly turned down Bielsa as Ange’s possible successor a decade ago is something I’ll never forgive👎🏼
That was the single biggest mistake the FFA/FA has ever made imho.
