This is what I hate most about the 48 team world cup.

Personally - with the exception of South America, and perhaps Oceania - every confederation should have their final round be X groups (X being how many direct slots they receive, or 1/2 of the direct slots they receive) and the winners of each group qualify (Top 2 when the groups are 1/2 of the direct slots)

If I'm the US I wouldn't be overly worried about us but as an Australian fan I do have quiet confidence we can get something from that game. It'll have to be another underdog performance. I hope we are less wasteful in the final third and more attacking cohesion between our run and gunners.

This is the exact correct mentality from a US fan, recognise that you aren't going to smash us, don't be worried but we can beat you if we show up.

Spain and Argentina both lost their first games in 2010 and 2022 and then went on to win the tournament. Switzerland and Saudi Arabia who won those games didn't make it out of the group.

Never overreact to the first round of matches no matter the result.

Popovic will no doubt adapt tactics and personnel for the USA game in consultation with Okon, Jedinak and Foxe. I'll be surprised if we're not surprised again on Saturday. If he jiggles anything I hope it results in Bos having more of an influence in attack than he had v Turkey

Japan & Sth Korea are looking very good, their biggest issue has been scoring goals, they got 2 each against Euro teams, including one of the best Netherlands (though Netherlands better team).
They are technically better than most Euro teams apart from the big 6 (Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands, England & Portugal).
