Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

I think they got cocky to be honest. The fact that Yildiz came on at half time is the cherry in the pudding if I'm honest. Usually those kinds of changes will come later in the second half - the half time changes being for something very specific. Given his apparent injury concerns, I think Montella took it as the perfect opportunity (Given how much we'd be dominated apparently) to rest the star player with injury concerns (because surely they could beat us without him, right?) And it just did not go that way for them.
seriously guys/D, now don't get me wrong I'm luving our performance and result.
It was just meant to be, all the prep in world etc as I said the only thing they didn't do was get by Beach.
They created the chances, infact 7 shots on target, how many of those were straight to Beachy Thankfully ! least half.
It was like he was a magnet and held up brilliantly might I add, no split ball from any save if a recall right.
The diving finger tip glance was epic, another GK 50/50 wouldn't have deflected it.
The margins didn't go their way in front of goal.

Yes, I think this all correct - but I do think that first half at least, they didn't put their best out there. I was surprised that we came out of the blocks the first 5 mins the way we did (much like US did against Portugal), until Turkey settled in leading up to the drinks ad break. From what I understand, I don't think they put their full best team out there, and it bit them in the arse early on, and then when they had to chase the game, our defence held out well.

yer I agree with this - those pesky hydration breaks work for some and others not.
The first or 2nd they were pumping us and of all things you want to carry on eh, I think our 2nd came after the break, that would have stunned them greatly.

When we played them in a friendly they won 2-1 but I think the score flattered them.

Did a lot of stats on the game looking at replays too. Unless they have a lot more cattle to choose from, Im not sure why they are so confident?
The United States are mainly confident in the quality of their passing and defence because they rely on quick, incisive passing in addition to putting pressure on their opposition and shutting them down early, yet their defensive line doesn't have the same height as we do with Circati, Souttar and either Cam Burgess or Lucas Herrington, as well as the fact that their main attacking option in Folarin Balogun is similar to Nestory Irankunda in that both follow the same physical profile and are more or less equally as clinical as each other in terms of finding the back of the net from open play by getting inside the box and converting chances into shots at goal.

Speed beats height mate... And the Seppos are bloody fast, that much is clear... and brutal on the finish, never mind just Balogin did you see old mate Reiners outside of the right boot goal to ice it? If we give them the ball we are cooked... We'ere gonna have to play our way through them on Saturday, I hope Poppa has another magic trick up his sleeve.

Tony Popovic will be relying on shutting down the midfield early when we play the United States on Saturday because what worked against Turkey will not work then since Folarin Balogun and Giovanni Reyna are both similar to players like Holly McNamara and Skye Halmarick in that they rely on pace and agility to find the back of the net from open play by getting inside the box, as is the case with Nestory Irankunda, and Popaball has historically struggled against sides that have dedicated strikers with that type of physical profile but if all else fails we still have our talls in Circati, Souttar and either Cam Burgess or Lucas Herrington to block shots at goal and progress the ball downfield through the counter attack.

Our defence was so professional. I don't think I've ever been so calm watching us absorb attack after attack. I actually enjoy watching our defence shut the door each time.
I think it's our best ever world cup defensive display. So organised and calm.

I have always thought that Maty has never been at his best in World Cups. I can’t remember him making anything more than routine saves. I don’t think he would have reached that tip into the post.
Ryan's best performances were against Tunisia and Denmark with his catches and gathers in hectic stages. It's just the butterfly effect that by starting Beach he was going to stop everything or nothing.

I don't think Ryan gets to all of them but to Beach's fortune he had 2 or 3 right at him at pace. A bit either side and it probably goes in. I feared the shot before we scored was going to his side.

Bahseer got a few things wrong for dramatic effect. Claiming one shot was deflected when it wasn't. Just shouts out things immediately for effect. Also screamed Okon's name when it was Circati who blocked the shot but screaming so loud for a defender when opponent's attacker is highlight of the scene is odd.

I've also noticed some commentators simply not being aware of the players so if something happens they just shout 'they have scored' instead of having race caller eyes and knowledge to get the info out. Vast gap in professionalism.

Again really butterfly effect but I can't believe they didn't bring on Uzun. Theie 2 centre backs were poor in the floor too and I wonder if Kabak or Söyüncü will come in.
