Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

There's still 2 more games to go, a lot can happen and since I won big on sports-bet Ill be eating Pizza and kababs until the next match cum Satuday. Stick ya noodle cups up ya ass Im getting fed!

First thing I said once I settled down from that Metcalfe goal was how much it reminded me of that Holman goal
An attacking midfielder whose main assett is off the ball

When are we going to see a player with that profile in the a league?

We need to evolve and embrace tactical variety

I'm counting 25. Was someone so cramped they went down the tunnel. Is Hrustic the 3rd from the right with the yellow kit vest in his hand?

Wouldn't surprised me if he stormed off again.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Turkish midfielder for Inter Milan): We literally dominated the match, they went 2-0 up with long balls. We were the team that deserved to win. We conceded unnecessary goals. Nothing is over yet, we have matches ahead of us.

I'm sure avoiding reality and the lessons from it will serve Turkiye well ...

Hrustic looked stoked at full time. I didn't see any sooking just a proud and happy team mate.
I'll have to watch the video footage. Just can't see any photos. I wonder who from the 25 is missing? Nothing sinister just curious.

As someone else said, walking into another team’s game plan and losing is not dominating.

Hat off to Popovic and the team. That game plan was perfectly executed. Perhaps better than any other time in Popovic's tenure.

I thought Popovic had lost the plot picking Beach and Okon. He was vindicated.

I really worried that the step up from AL to WC football would be a step too far for Okon. But he bossed a world class midfield. He was excellent man-on-man against Guler. That pass phhhhwoarrrrr! It's why he was picked but to execute!

Beach must feel like he's in outter space right now.

Irankunda holy shit! The mentality of that kid he just wants to win. That touch was so much class and the near side finish ballsy and skillful.

Toure had the Turkish defenders shitting themselves and he wasn't even at his best.

Metcalfe was so important connecting and playing between the lines. I love that when he pounced on Turkiyes mistake and they sat off him that he drove at them and didn't hesitate to take what they gave him. Shoulda showed respect.

Popovic's subs were perfect. Italiano was stoic down that right defence but its a tough gig getting targeted by players the calibre of Yildiz and Yilmaz for 90'. Geria to defend was the correct call. Irvine to bring energy. Yengi to monster and stress their defence, what a unit.

Then our defence. Souttar, Burgess, Circati with O'Neill screening gave no quarter. Turkiye hitting long balls at Akturkoglu was them out of ideas and panicking.

So many good moments. Okons turns, tackles, passes. Bos sitting his man on his arse with tricky footwork. The goals. That Beach save from Calhanoglu's drive.

It was beautiful to watch. Credit to the boys. What a game. What a night. Mentality monsters.

Irankunda has always been a player with an extra 10 years of football intelligence and experience in his head. He is composed on the ball, reads the game and positions well and knows when the ball needs to be hit. Honestly, when he has the ball, I just get infected with his confidence.

That kind of attitude and mentality, they will never do anything great. That's a player and a team where it's clear they haven't played at a World Cup before. There is a lot more to winning a World Cup match then trying to pass and dribble our defence on the wings the whole game and taking long shots. It's empty and plastic "domination". Our game-plan was to let them have the ball as they did because it works in our favour but it's given him the false notion that they dominated because they possessed the ball. Turkey are going to struggle.
This exactly!! Yes, Turkey did dominate possession. But you’ve gotta be more respectful and humble when discussing your opponents. That type of mentality caused us to lose to Fiji once.

Beach peobably saves the 2nd goal. 1st one unlikely.

The US also has an average keeper so we should be trying our luck again.
All three of their goalies still play in the MLS. I’m not tryna demean the MLS because it’s a great league these days (largely thanks to money), but given they’ve got European players in every other position I think it’s safe to say that goalkeeping is their weak spot.

Even with an average keeper the United States midfield and forward line is still more dangerous than Turkey's though and Folarin Balogun would be a similar type of player to Nestory Irankunda which is something we have to watch out for heading into next week.
That’s a hot take. They’ve definitely got good depth but I rage Turkey’s forward line and midfield higher. Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız are outstanding young players and Germany should be fuming that they didn’t manage to get the latter.
