Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

Now ask yourselves this...

Would we have scored our two goals if Beach had been their keeper tonight?

How flimsy the whimsy of football!

Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Turkish midfielder for Inter Milan): We literally dominated the match, they went 2-0 up with long balls. We were the team that deserved to win. We conceded unnecessary goals. Nothing is over yet, we have matches ahead of us.

That kind of attitude and mentality, they will never do anything great. That's a player and a team where it's clear they haven't played at a World Cup before. There is a lot more to winning a World Cup match then trying to pass and dribble our defence on the wings the whole game and taking long shots. It's empty and plastic "domination". Our game-plan was to let them have the ball as they did because it works in our favour but it's given him the false notion that they dominated because they possessed the ball. Turkey are going to struggle.

The US also has an average keeper so we should be trying our luck again.
Even with an average keeper the United States midfield and forward line is still more dangerous than Turkey's though and Folarin Balogun would be a similar type of player to Nestory Irankunda which is something we have to watch out for heading into next week.

The US match up well physically against us and have more raw pace than Turkey, they will absolutely boss the game.

However they have a slow 38 yr old centre back in Tim Ream (reads the game well but painfully slow) and a returning from injury Chris Richards. Neither were tested against Paraguay, neither wants to be in a foot race with Irakunda and Toure.

Im quietly confident we can get a result. Although a belting could occur if we get breached early.

The Socceroos will need to shut down the United States midfield and forward line early on and hold their defensive shape as we can't afford to be committing needless errors and turnovers if Popovic decides to implement the same tactical system given their side's quality.

I try so hard to respect any opposition but that US midfield has 3 players that went through Leeds - 1 bang average and 2 bloody useless and got us relegated. So that makes it hard.

But yeah I think we'll need to tighten up to have a chance against USA because nobody usually lets two goals in through the front door like Turkey gave us.

Lets strike our opponents a deal

They can have the possession stats, we can have the win

I did briefly wonder, after some of their post-match comments, whether they have similar mindset to the middle-east teams we routinely play in quals. However, fair play to them, I didn't really see them throwing themselves to the ground in performative art displays, so probably not.

Adams and Mckennie are much better players now imo.

I hope one day we experiment with a 3 in the midfielder (Okon, Robertson and Volpato). I think our possession and potential chances would go through the roof.

6 - Okon
8 - Robertson
10 - Volpato
RW - Irankunda
ST - Toure
LW - Bos

I think it's the best attacking lineup we currently possess.

Simply butterfly effect. Ryan wouldn't have saved all of those that Beach did. Switching keepers back would bring shakiness I find.

Beach put in one of the best individual world cup performances I have even seen in our shirt. Even if there was some rotation strategy behind it, that has to get thrown out the window because you can't drop someone after that performance.

Seeing posts replied to but can't find originals as this thread is so hot.

Our most famous world cup victory for me up until today was probably still against Serbia but Denmark is more nostalgic. I think today replaces it.

The emotion and joy from Okon and Foxe when we scored. Okon man what a guy living his own world cup dream after never getting there as a player.
The Serbia victory and this one both featured two memorable and quality goals by the Aussies. Long may it continue!
