Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

Slowly becoming reality. I always find as tournaments go on the colour fades as many teams have gone home. Once the line up is in it's time to get serious.

The more I think about it, the more Italiano's injury has fucked us. At any rate, this is what I want to see:

To explain the thinking:

  1. I want Bos on the left hand side, both to assist Herrington defending against Salah, and also to exploit the extra space left by Salah given he's injured and performed very little defensive work. I think this side might well be where the game is won and lost.
  2. That means Geria comes into the right hand side over Behich, who I don't quite trust there. This probably means we get very little forward impetus from the right wing back, but it's a compromise I'm willing to make.
  3. Irvine stays over O'Neill in large part due to the aerial threat he poses from Bos and Volpato's crosses. The Egyptians are short and we can hurt them with accurate crossing. I've retained Okon Jr over O'Neill because of his better passing range, but I don't mind too much if O'Neill starts instead (he's had a great world cup so far).
  4. Toure comes back into the starting lineup as well to provide further aerial threat and provide knockdowns for Volpato, who might well be a little isolated with Geria behind him.
  5. Irankunda moves out to the right to exploit his pace and the space that will be left in behind Salah. Bos overlaps him on the outside.
  6. Volpato over Metcalfe due to his superior dribbling and his ability to create chances, but again this is a close run thing and I wouldn't mind if the latter starts either.

360 reporting an unchanged 11. Yeah it's alright.

One game at a time but a slight concern we're wearing out O'Neill. An Okon Irvine midfield to start could also have worked.

Irankunda to be more mobile and move wide I hope.

The Socceroos' starting XI for our World Cup round of 32 game against Egypt has been named. Tony Popovic heads into today's match with an unchanged playing list from our last group stage match against Paraguay, with Harry Souttar leading the line as captain and Patrick Beach again starting between the sticks, as he has done for the entirety of our campaign so far.

Egypt have named their starting lineup for the World Cup round of 32 game against the Socceroos. Mo Salah is right and starts for the Pharaohs, leading the line for them as captain, with Mostafa Shobeir starting between the sticks.

I dont know what Toure has done wrong
Mo Toure has not done anything wrong throughout the Socceroos' World Cup campaign and having Nestory Irankunda start up front as a sole striker is a disadvantage for us given his lack of height.

And honestly... I am more happy that Salah is starting. If the dude is carrying a little niggle than chances are he's going to get less influence on the game as it goes on and may even have to be taken off for more fresh legs.

Salah coming on in the 60th minute...... fuck that would make me shit myself. Egypt team and crowd would fucking go beserk.
