Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

Been saying all tournament we should have picked Goodwin over Leckie. Goodwin wasnt fit but neither was leckie, but in Goodwins case hes 2 yrs younger and has a laser of a left boot on him. If we are chasing the game against a low block there are few better players in world football to throw on in final mins to whip crosses in.

I would have picked Goodwin and Boyle of Nish and Leckie.
Not Boyle. They should have picked Younis

I wonder if our floaty corners are a deliberate strategy from the coaches, although I have no idea why they would do that. I find it hard to believe that our corner takers are incapable of putting in more dangerous corners than we have been doing.

To add to that i think hes covered the most distance of any player this world cup.

Much maligned player but been outstanding this world cup and isnt being given enough credit.

Whilst Bos is our most exciting/talented player with highest ceiling, Souttar and ONeill have arguably been our best.
I think Circati has been equal if not better than Souttar

With all this drama so far, we'll have chances, they'll have chances and I don't know what to think. 0:0 or 3:0 either way.

I never doubted O'Neill's value in this team.Has had lots of detractors because he is not flashy but does the hard work his position requires-screening the CBs,covering for the wing backs, intercepting passes and blocking the passing lanes. He and Metcalfe play Popa's game strategy almost to perfection therefore basically his first picks pre-WC and during the tournament.

I'm just in two minds. Losing will somehow be an obvious thing but also so disappointing while Egypt's vulnerabilities will present us with great opportunities.

Got to laugh at everyone here that thinks we r in for a chance at beating Egypt lol. Can’t wait for the salt cum Saturday morning. Stats don’t lie and we don’t have a chance in hell to get a result. Plus the we will have a Sth American Ref that will favour all things Egypt.
Egypt 6 - 0 Socceroos.

Interesting, I'm not nervous. I was slightly nervous for the Turkey game because it's the first game but it's the most chill I've been for the Roos ever. Confident in this team.

I'm not nervous or confident. It comes down to this is the easiest team we have faced in a knockout round so it represents a great chance. That said it won't be easy. Egypt have a very good team - not just Salah (whether he plays or not). A good performance, a bit of luck and a referee that is even-handed is all I ask and then see where it ends.

That was pretty dour read but the tactical analysis was spot on. Very positive about the defensive control and discipline. It was interesting commentary about what that means for our attacking opportunities.

I was surprised at the Okon and O'Neill commentary. Particularly Okon. Especially after those passing stats from earlier today for O'Neill. We still need abetter mid to progress the ball. I felt vindicated in my view Robertson should have been here in that role. Popovic needs to let one of the CMs play more progressively so that we can get better offensive balance.

The CF is isolated and thete is a disconnect between our wing backs and wide forwards. We need to settle those positions to build chemistry and combinations. Let them also be more positive.

It made me think if we don't allow more risk we're relying on mistakes or set pieces for goals and that will be dull and nerve wracking.

I'm convinced we need Toure CF or failing that Yengi. Get Irankunda wide. Metcalfe or Volpato right is okay. Give Okon more license to pass progressively.

This squad is missing Dylan Scicluna's line breaking ability which would've also been useful in one of Popa's inverted attacking midfielder positions, he also has previous fill in right back experience at A-league and NPL level. Am confident the in-form and youthful exuberance of Younis would've also have been an upgrade on Velupillay.
