Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

Had we lost Christian Volpato blame the bosses of Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers, both of whom basicly told the youngster he was not wanted. Hearing this almost shattered the kid with a dream.

''I just remember the car ride home with my dad, I was crying". Then he said "dont worry son we'll go to Italy".
And yet, he's the only player in the current squad fitting his profile. Tells you what you need to know about some of our myopic priorities in the youth space.

Could have come to CCMFC - we take their rejects all the time ;)

Looks like he's never playing in the A League.

Why was Volpato rejected from both Sydney FC and WSW? Was it an attitude problem?

I'm sure there are rumours circulating about that but the truth is development isn't a straight line, many promising youngsters fail to make it and there are certain environments that are better suited to a profile of player than others.

Would Volpato be the same player today IF one of WSW/SFC brought him into the fold?

Without knowing the ins and outs of his case Sydney and WSW have a tendency to favour 'athletes' over footballera. Bit of a generalisation but it is a very important criteria for them.

So if Christian was smaller than the rest of his cohort he probably doesn't get very far.

I agree player development is non-linear but something doesn't add up here. This kid had his 2nd academy rejection in 2019, goes to Italy to trial where Roma accepts him, then gets Totti as his agent and makes his Serie A debut in 2021. 2 years from an A League academy reject to a big club in Serie A? That's an incredible rise.

What did Roma see that the academies in Australia didn't?

a kid that wasn't a robot - your frowned upon playing your own game, dribbling frowned on - shamed all the robots and the clicky parents and favs within the academy :)
Read what you wish and think bs.
We unique.

Take it one game at a time, definitely can beat Egypt if we show up, and though I think it's very unlikely we beat Argentina in the RO16, I think it's possible, crazier things have happened. If any team is going to finally do it, it's this team.
Love the attitude. There have beeen many monumental upsets in World Cup history. If we have a blinder we could do Argentina like we did with Charlie Yankos and that glorious goal back in 1988
