Poppa Out

I get what you’re saying, but we didn’t have to beat Paraguay. This is tournament play. It’s about doing enough to progress. To do that you play to your strengths and you don’t take risks. In 2010 WC Spain scored only 8 goals in 7 games. I reckon not one Spaniard complained about them playing too defensively.
I get that. You play what's in front of you. I think it would have just been better for confidence and mentality to pick up that win. A players picks up a goal or two that boosts their confidence for the next game. In tournament football there are so many variables. Picking up a win and playing an attacking brand of football puts your opposition on notice, or gets them to rethink their tactics and team selections. Things that can help sway your favour.

Is there a way to get rid of Popa? Or is he locked in. No point being invested till he leaves. Football Australia are absolute idiots for extending his contract before the World Cup. Like we could've got grouped.

Sack him and pay out his contract.

Popovic to say now is not the time to talk about decisions made. He'll just deflect.

Yeah he can fuck off and take his coaching staff with him too... absolutely criminal levels of mismanagement of this squad. I'm pretty certain we could pluck a bunch of people from this forum who would have better tactics than Popa. He's a dinosaur and his football is absolute gash to watch too, up there with Holger as the worst coach we've had this century that's how bad I think of him. What a fucking disgrace.

This game was another notch on the Popovic ‘I do things because why not’ belt.

Honestly - he got lucky with the way he set up against Turkey. They were diabolical, and Popovic has let it get to his head that it was his tactical surprises that caused it. So despite playing with attacking potency in that game, has now gone the next 3 games without playing that same front 3.

He thinks that he is a tactical master ever since then - and the change for Ryan proves it. Not because it was a keeper change, but because it was Ryan. If he brought Izzo on, I would have maybe understood a little bit - but like someone said earlier - there’s info on Ryan. Ryan was the one Arnie pulled off against Peru and made that tactic work. It’s like he just wanted to copy Arnie to prove himself as a tactical master.

Arnie looks a lot better in all of this in hindsight. Arnie gets shat in because he had his success with Sydney. That’s it. Same thing happened to Corica, and now hear his plaudits at Auckland. It was time for Arnie to move on though, but Popovic should be gone if he doesn’t make the final of the Asian Cup.

Really feel we got through the group stage because of the talent we have and despite Poppa's tactics....

We look a better team when we are forced to get out of gameplan lol.

Irankunda as the lone striker..... what a waste.

It stings cause this game...... we could have won and not only won but won convincingly in the 90. Egypt were pretty shocking for most of the game.

We’ve had a few bad ones. Verbeek was shocking and wasted the end of the golden generation. Van Marwijk was abysmal and I actually think even worse than Popa, but he at least had the decency to fuck off straight after the World Cup.

Popa’s really bad though. He’s exactly the opposite of what we need going forward.

Arnie was good somehow. He understood his team very well.

He needs an ultimatum, learn to attack or else we'll take your name off the office door... if we had a headquarters...

Yeah it's a tight list and may be recency bias but I can't remember being this angry (and able to pinpoint almost every reason for the result on the coach) since the Holger days. Verbeek made a huge fuck up for the Germany game in 2010, Popa basically did the same for the US game and then one upped himself today. BvM was very disappointing but in his defence he only had a handful of games to prepare and as you say he had the decency to fuck off afterwards, meanwhile we've had to suffer through horrible Popaball for near 2 years now and we all know he's an egomaniacal c*nt who won't have the decency to resign or take all the blame.

Fully agree that Arnie was good and is definitely looked at very positively now. He will be seen even better as of today, he's in the upper tier of managers we've had, and his achievement last world cup is much better than what we did this tournament. Guus, Ange, and Arnie are clear at the top for sure, and Popa is a fucking disgrace.
