Matildas friendlies in June 2026

Mexico defending well. Some underrated players in here that the Big Six should look out for!

Hopefully their visit to Oakvale Farm didn’t give them any ideas lol.
Mexico are going to be frustrating the Matildas throughout the match similar to how their men's team played against the Socceroos.

If this is “World Cup preparation mode” then Joe Montemurro needs to fuck off.
If the Matildas can't be getting results against Latin American or South American sides then how are we meant to contend for major tournament silverware against the likes of Japan, South Korea, the United States and European powerhouses?

Too many old guard picked.Give Macnamara ,Gomez, etc a start.Matildas looked shaky in the first half -lots of turnovers.Torpy at LB doesn't look international standard.
100%, I’m sick of seeing the same lineup. It’s fucking ridiculous and then we wonder “Why did Vesna Milivojević pick Serbia?”.

Whoever picks the lineup must be high. But in the words of Tove Lo, “gotta stay high, all the time” lol.

There are clearly problems with the selection policy and Emily van Egmond should not have made the playing list altogether in favour of youth prospects like Peta Trimis and Shelby McMahon, and ideally Holly McNamara should have been fielded in the starting XI instead of having Sam Kerr as a sole striker up front.

Joe Montemurro is given free rein to pick the Matildas playing lists and starting elevens by Heather Garriock and Football Australia which means that we rely on the current selection policy that prioritises the old guard and favours experience over youth.

I think Van Egmond is a very good player for us when she and we are in control. In tight spaces as we bring the ball forward and are playing as a co-ordinated running group her passing is quality and incisive.

Unfortunately, that only covers games against much lower quality teams and mere moments against better opponents.

The rest of the time she might as well not be there. Said it many times I am afraid and will keep saying it along with everyone else - her time is long past.

Foord gets rave reviews from the commentating team, but to me she is still a ball hog. Who cares if you can run through four opposition players if you then lose the ball! She has bugger all vision when she has a chance to open up our game, other than what she sees in the tunnel ahead of her.

When you count the number of times she has had the ball at her feet and an opportunity in a team sport to create something, and she keeps it at her feet until she loses it, the benefit is far less than the opportunity one decent passing player with vision would have given us in similar positions. Her strength and speed are largely negated when combined with her blindness.

Mexico are quite effective when they come forward. Letting the ball do the work and using cohesive plays to create their chances. It is nice football they are playing.
