It's going to be interesting to see how Marco Silva goes at Benfica.....
From what I've read he apparently turned down a 3 year £11m pa contract from Fulham to go to Benfica for a much smaller wage packet.
I really like this decision to leave Fulham for Benfica, it’s a rare commitment to ambition over financial gain. Silva has prioritised managing an historic club, competing for major silverware, and leading a high-pressure, elite European project over a small to mid sized Premier League stability situation.
It shows that for all the money involved in the game today, the drive to build a legacy, feel the weight of a massive fanbase, and test yourself against the pressure of winning titles still holds more value for some.
Mind his €5m.pa Benfica contract isn't exactly chicken feed.
And while managing Fulham in London allows for a certain degree of anonymity due to London's size and Fulham's relative "smallness" compared to other London clubs, in Lisbon, a manager of a Benfica will be living in a "fishbowl". Every tactical decision, every post-match comment, and even every social outing is under the microscope of an extremely passionate, football-obsessed media and fanbase.
