Green & Gold FC podcast

I have always thought a better solution might be to make the Socceroos a more appealing option rather than trying to con these players into settling for the the ugly chick?
You become more attractive by having better players tho?

So its a chicken and egg problem

Besides, croatia called segecic every week and have camps for diaspora players all around the world. Is that conning players? Im only saying we should be as aggressive in pursuing dual nationals as our rivals

I'm at the 28 min mark of the Matt Windley Podcast.

Finished the ironing early, LFC! I haven't finished this podcast though.

*Being a journo, Matt asked Grazor, the host, a good question. Then Grazor expounded with quite a detailed, ideal paradigm for Aus football. Very profound it was too, Grazor!

* One frustration I had with the interview was that Matt stated something would never happen in Aus, hence, there was no point pursuing it. I wish Grazor had jumped on this response and asked Matt to shed light on why it could not happen?
I think it was something related to promotion /releg - not likely to happen in some type of manifestation that was being discussed.

In political activism, the union movement would never tolerate an employer saying this.
For argument's sake, if the Football Players Assoc (PFA), and there was a hypothetical Australian Football Fans Association, who both boycotted playing and spectating at all AL games, it would force the AL owners, or, Football Aus to change course - quickly.

It gets back to the American G and G Podcast guest saying that FFA losing control of the AL to the clubs, means the pre-existing AL clubs are only interested in making money for themselves, not making decisions for the general benefit of the entire football scenario in Aus.

There was an excellent point made in the podcast, but can't remember what it was? I will go back and finish it. I'm enjoying this Matt Windley Podcast immensely.

I have learned a lot about governance in Aus football from G and G podcasts!

After reading a 360 Football article about Deni Juric wearing his Socceroo shirt as a young kid for years, fantasising about growing up and playing for the Roos, good luck to those dual nationals who seek other countries. I agree with Popa.

Also, saw a vdeo on 360 Football, where Degenek said it was like rejoining family playing for the Socceroos.

Maybe some of those dual nationals who leave Aus, don't feel part of the Socceroo team unit to the same extent as other Roos, and could be a bit more individualistic in planning their careers.

Daniel Arzani stated how easy it is to fit into team culture in Scotland, who seem so much like Aussies, compared to Netherlands/Denmark and Hungary.

Yeah in the last two pods we give a few things that can be done to foster that connection better. We should be at least as aggressive in pursuing dual nationals as our rivals are

I know the profound point on the Matt Windley Podcast now. I saw a MCG post on the AL, which reminded me.

Grazor stated that there is the same percentage of active football players in England who watch EPL, as active football players in Aus watch the AL.

14 million people play club/school football in England.

1.5 - 2 million play club/school football in Aus.

According to Grazor the percentage is identical for active footballers who watch the EPL in England, as they watch the AL in Aus.

Grazor argued that we need more football players playing in Aus, and with the same conversion rate as England, football will become a bigger sport in Aus. It makes sense.

Yeah i conceded a point about the politics being difficult because of the voting structure of congress at the moment

At the moment there is no effective lobbying body calling for a change in congress. I believe football supporters association is mainly calling to abolish member feds which is a different issue

The depth in Aus for the 24 yos and under is such ATM, I don't think 2-3 individual dual nationals seeking other countries is going to make much difference to a Socceroo team structure.

The biggest ones who have got away are Craig Johnston, Tony Dorigo, Joe Simunic and Christian Vieri. Ned Zelic walked out prematurely too.

I don't like to say it, but 4 of them have been described as phallus heads - in other Aussie players' biographies, or, groups of fans who know of them in the areas they've lived/grown up in. Considered to be poor teammates, or, uncoachable.

Yeah and another back of the envelope calculation i did was this. What sort of crowds do we get if we have an open pyramid with a second division? At the moment the number of participants, as counted by regular players including amateur, is 30 times thd number of people attending a league games on a given weekend. This, as u said, is a similar ratio to the epl.

Based on the championship, i suspect crowd averages for a 10 team home and away comp can get around 1500-2000 in a closed shop league. Remarkably, the championship crowds seemed completely non overlapping with the a league.

Now what happens if we had promotion and relegation. If the same effects occur in australia as mexico, the top division increases in attendancd by 15% (heavily driven by better attendances ftom clubs at the bottom of the ladder having a relegation battle) and the 2nd tier nearly doubles in attendance.

Roughly the ratio of participants to attendies is around 19 to 1. This is getting close to what england get across their top 4 leagues and similar to what a lot of countries get.

So i think
1) we dont underperform in average crowds in the a league
2) we do underperform in total crowds in national tiers
3) a big cultural problem is too many get embarrassed at yhe prospect of a club playing nationally with crowds of 1k. Probably envy of afl/nrl drives this

Unfortunately i beg to differ. The cream of the crop are the players other countries take. Also they are doing so pretty aggresively. Albanian twitter claim they have won mehmeti and the 20 yr old perth glory striker. There are pretty common defections

Oh no!

Memeti looks to be a loss and if the Perth striker goes too this is encroaching on too many Aussies.

Albania rarely qualify for WCs or Euro Champs. I’m surprised Memeti and the PG striker would defect to Albania?

Yes it could really become a crisis. Segecic got a phone call every week from croatia to woo him despite being well down their pecking order

Interesting?

And Croatia are arguably close to being a world powerhouse ATM. Wouldn't have thought a Championship player, Segecic, would warrant much attention from the Croatian Football Fed?

They have had so many players at big UEFA clubs and playing in good UEFA leagues, or playing for Hajduk Split or Dynamo Zagreb in big UEFA comps.

Yeah i guess they are content to nab every player in case some of them come good

I agree about the chicken or egg situation.. I suspect the Croatian FA is on the constant prowl for diaspora players because of Croatia's small indigenous population.

I dont see it as conning players to be in constant contact, I have been critical of Arnie for BOTH Triantis and Volpato (and now Segacic) . Under Popa the scouting processes seems broken now if a player that hasn't ever set foot in Australia can be handed a cap yet players that have played youth football for us are ingonred with mealy mouthed platitudes about "not selling the shirt"

I have to agree with this, Popovic is completely inconsistent in how he handles players, and it is to the national team's detriment. You have Triantis and Segacic who have both come through the system and starred in Aus underage teams, and were progressing impressively in the SPL and Championship, and get called into the squad but not given any game time. Then you have Suto, mid-20's, never set foot in Australia, played for a lowly team in the lowly Croatian league but then comes off the bench for the past couple of months in the SPL, and I have a strong feeling that Popovic will give him some game time in the next few days.

Sure, have a look at these "imports" if you think there is value in it, but don't not look after the homegrown young players who show a lot of promise. In fact these young homegrown high performance players should be the priority.

Croatia called sega every week and I vaguely recall hearing that about greece towards triantis. So it seems to be standard

the current system means we have more leverage over 2nd tier players who have never set foot in australia due to the one time switch mechanic

Haven't listened to all the pod yet - but maybe the endurance v intensity is a result of the scouting not taking into account the hot humid weather affecting a greater proportion of the ALM 26 game regular season. The MLS suffers the same problem but for a much smaller proportion of games. Now to the Grand Final is when traditionally the speed of the game picks up. A lot of the other leagues compared are in milder climates.

yeah we chat about how much the weather makes a difference. Some of the leagues he compares to are summer leagues mind you
