General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2025/26 season

The recruiting pool must be shallow if they get another ex-fumbleball bloke.
serious question - if you got a bunch of volunteers who were passionate about football running the apl, would it really be run worse?

How come football doesn't have fans that are C-suite level? I know one bloke who is in finance just below C-level but aside from that - no one. No lawyers, accountants or anything that pop to mind. Also knowing that if they do take on such a job, they would be taking a pay cut.

Most lawyers & accountants seem to be into rugby union and AFL.

If they have at least a rudimentary background in business/administration to complement their ⚽️ fandom, then I for one genuinely doubt it’d be run any worse.

Some guy on SokkahTwitter posted once that it’s our(🇦🇺⚽️ fans) own fault for not pursuing careers in politics/the civil-service/big-business, by which we’d gain the means to tip the scales however much in football’s favour here.

This makes sense because I was left wondering what the fuck is a C-Suite level

They'd probably be on stress leave when they can't afford to pay their mortgage 😅 But I agree with the sentiment. Aren't there some successful fan run clubs going around?

GReen and gold fc having the same functionality and better (apart from match reports) than 442 despite being non profit makes me wonder how many paid positions in the game could be replaced with passionate volunteers with the saved money redirected to grassroots

Stephen Conroy was a former senator and remains an ALP factional leader. Can't think of anyone else.

C-Suite refers to CEO (Chief Executive Officer), CFO (Chief Financial Officer), CIO (Chief Information Officer), etc. In other words corporate level. In the AFL the only one who broke through was Andrew Demetriou because he became a lawyer, then union rep, then joined the AFL executive.
And surely, with so many European migrants, second generation, third generation, surely someone would have risen to the top and remain a football fan.

Crowds are down, ratings are down, might as well bring back Covid days. WU will be back in the A-league next season which is an absolute joke. But going by fans they do better then CCM with there 1k crowds.

I was going to comment in this week's round of AL games, but it has probably gone. I've watched a fair bit of AL football this week on replays.

* Ben Garrucio acts as the captain on the pitch for SFC. How he wasn 't played at Left Back from the beginning, astonishes me? He kept sorting out hotheaded teammates and calming them down, whilst admonishing opponents.

Now SFC have a really experienced back four of Rhyan Grant, Tisserand, Alex Grant and Ben Garrucio. Alex G is cumbersome with his distribution in tight spaces, but is a rugged ball winning defender with sound positioning . They can coach the SFC team shape in front of them, from a sound base.

I would like to see some of the young SFC defenders of last year get a chance - Popovic or Courtney- Perkins. SFC now have too much depth after having a very young team last year and an idiot coach, Talay, not playing Max Burgess.

Garuccio was injured at the start of the season.

Popovic is shite.

Jodi Valadon is starting to play much better and kicking on as I expected. His weakness was winning hard balls last year. He has improved immeasurably. He outjumped Craig Goodwin this week to win a heading duel!
JV's vastly improved sliding tackling is well-timed and effective, tackling with the correct foot, both right and left, as the occasion demands. The pundits claimed MV were always looking for Mata, but ditto JV. This guy's close ball control, fast handling speed, impeccable body shape and first touch is one of the best we have in Aus, including Euroroos. He has a good engine, but might lack a bit of pace over the turf.

D'Arriga did well playing next to him this week as a DM. His technique on the ball has improved since I last saw him play Aus U23 football. His only issue, is he has put on no muscular bulk, as he likes to play a rugged game. This week against AU, D'Arriga and Valadon were just as effective as the Teague and Valadon pairing.

With the classy Mata getting matchfit, I'm not sure how to fit an improved since going to Europe, Genreau, back in, who has impressed me in MV attacking roles. His temperament is a problem though.

Miranda seems to be organising the defence.

A fit again, Villupillay, has boosted the MV attack. He defends well from the front having a terrific workrate. There has been plenty of attacking thrust from him too.

If Geria and Duke are looking for short term loans, I'd rather see them play for one of the young teams, who desperately need their experience - Jets, CCM, although a currently young City have heaps of experienced players recovering from injury.

I thought Goodwin had a poor game for AU, and can't see him playing in the World C unless he improves immeasurably. He was getting beaten in 1v1 duels a bit. Goodwin looked like he lacked motivation. His young teammates, Alagich/Elagich, Yull, Jovanovic, Kikkianis, and Dukuly continue to progress.

For Perth Glory, although it should be Western United, Rhys Bozinovski is making giant steps forward. He has most of Valadon's attributes, but may have more pace and athleticism.

Bozinovski looks to have an enormous future given how well he is playing at such a young age, and his current rate of improvement -even since last season.

I've seen a few games for the Aus u23s, where Bozinovski ( underage) and Valadon just bossed the midfield for Aus. You don't want these guys receiving the ball and facing forwards if you are their opponents.
