General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2025/26 season

Maybe you should stick to your Australian rules, boards then.

Also keep in mind that due to the enormous size of this country, makes it impossible to attract large away followings too boost crowds.
Even in the "Big" leagues? The fully professional ones you are telling me about?

How do AFL fans from Melbourne end up in Perth or Adelaide every season?

Ex pats. That's how Swans got their crowds. Basically the answer for NSW and Qld teams who have little interest except for events.

Specifically for SA and WA, a lot of WA and SA Aussie Rules fans not only followed their local leagues before the AFL, they also followed the VFL. Are they really travelling or just turning up to watch their VFL team?

Can't really say, but we do see heaps of Perth Eagles and Fremantle jerseys not to mention Adelaide Crows jerseys around town when those clubs are visiting here... Judging by how successful their festival of football gather around the past couple of years I would say they have a culture of travelling for away games...

Maybe - but are they expats from SA and WA and gather rounds are events.

Not to say the A-League is better - looking at CCM grand finals. WSW vs CCM was probably 60-65% WSW - fair enough because of populations but City vs Mariners 95% Mariners, CCM vs Victory 90% Mariners AND these are for events. Victory for a normal game may bring 200-300, City 20-30 (or less).

CCM get decent crowds from NUJ, WSW and usually from SFC, less so on Macarthur

Personally I think it would be a bad thing - they are my club and easy to attend. More importantly from a Socceroo point of view they have probably been close to the most influential A League club since the start of the A-League. 38 Socceroos have played for the Mariners. More importantly 25 Socceroos got there A League start at the Mariners before becoming Socceroos with over 500 caps between them. 83 times a Mariners player has been captain.

Whats gone wrong with the Mariners in past 18 months? They won the league only two years ago.

Or it it a case of when they are winning, the community rallies, and when losing nobody cares?

Lots of tourists come for gather ground but there’s a lot of fans of Victorian clubs in SA as well.

MVFC used to bring around 2000-2500 to Allianz, then they became shite, and stopped coming up.

No - a lot of the community is a lot closer to the club and the academy. It's a case of a disillusioned fan base that has seen the squad decimated year on year without recovery time. Only Theoharous, Steele, Roux, Tapp and Di Pizio remain.

The team is rebuilding again with 7 players being academy graduates since that time. The fanbase is extremely parochial and will support these players and returning alumni like Redmayne. They do however expect that foreign players have to be noticeably better than Australian players. McCalmont probably fits that description this year, Edmondson less so.

Since that 2022-2023 season the squad has lost to overseas

Garang Kuol, Jason Cummings, Nectarios Triantis, Sam Silvera, Béni Nkololo, James McGarry, Marco Túlio, Max Balard, Joshua Nisbet, Jacob Farrell, Mikael Doka, Dylan Wenzell-Hall, Paul Ayongo & Kelechi John

Matt Simon and Danny Vukovic have retired and these players have gone to other ALM clubs

Daniel Hall, Brian Kaltak, Lachlan Bayliss & Alou Kuol have all gone to ALM clubs

They are a young squad - just over 22 years of age with only 2 visa players. 13 players are 20 or under.

I would expect them to be active in the transfer market in January with new ownership and probably a new manger (not Labinot Haliti as the Sydney press keep pushing). I expect that Moon will fill the Academy Manager role.

Australians, apart from brainwashed Victorians, famously only support winning teams.
Yeah even in AFL Victorians are happy to follow their club through thick or thin... 30-40 year trophy droughts are not uncommon but the members sign up every year regardless and attend. Gotta give them credit for that at least...

I hope you don't get lumped with Haliti mate, I really do.

I thought Di Pizio was good the other day. That wanker commentator McBreen talking about "output" from such a young player was made to look like the chump that he is after he was one of the best in a losing side. He's got a good future.

That's true- the VFL was a big thing in Adelaide. Everyone supported a VFL club as well as their local SANFL club. They could hardly get home from Saturday's match quick enough to watch the VFL replays on TV.
